Neighbor has HP Laptop xphomesp2. Try normal boot windows splash screen, then black screen...Safe mode boot(F8),networking,command prompt, vga, last known good and normal, all go thru 20 or 30 lines of loading system files drivers,etc..etc. Stops at \mup.sys. Tried loading XP Pro setup cd and before I get to Accept page (F8) Microsoft EULA,jumps to screen that says cannot load. No HDDR found, make sure connected and try again?
    Thanks...Rangedog

Hello Rangedog and welcome the Board,

You have one of those really bad errors.

    http://mcpmag.com/columns/article.asp?EditorialsID=729

Which in turn points to the very long thread at Annoyances.org

I've added to your thread title to indicate the original problem.

    Regards - Charles

    Hello Rangedog and Charles

First I would try Safe Mode Minimal not with networking to see if that works.

You did not say how long you waited because it can take a while 3-5 minutes or more sometimes.

Second it is probably not MUP.SYS as the name usually only shows on the screen after it successfully loaded.

It is the next driver that is the problem, which is usually the video driver.

    Try VGA mode boot!

    Mike

    SafeMode denial!

Thanks to ALL for different ideas and possible solutions. Bart's PE will not boot from DVD/CD rom, I can hear DVD/CDRom trying to boot but, spinning stops. Retried booting from XP Pro Cd and attempted repair(RC) but, blue screen says, did not find any HDD drives. Make sure any HDDR's are powered on and connected.Rebooted and observed the option(F2)of trying the automatic system recovery system(ASR)and owner does not have WASRD(Windows Automated System Recovery Disk). Downloaded suggested Flash Bios Firmware from HP's Trouble Shooting link and still system will not boot from floppy(via USB floppy,DVD/CD,USB Key or USB HDDR. HP,also suggested, running system diagnotic HDDR check. Stating that any errors shown in QUICK Check or Comprehensive Check(57 mins.) HDDR Failure and Replace but, there were "NO" ERRORS. John, mentioned drivers to see HDDR,which and where? I think if CD setup could see HDDR, repair would be possible.
    Thanks again to ALL,
    Rangedog

Look up the specifications for the machine at the HP website www.hp.com/support or look in the front of the User Guide. Drivers are required for a non standard drive controller. A standard drive controller is ATA, a non standard type is SATA or SCSI. If it happens to have a SATA controller you will need to load the drivers for the controller when the Windows CD is loading (look at the bottom of the screen for "Press F6 to install drivers for SCSI...... controllers "). I have not heard that laptops have started using SATA yet, but then again, it is inevitable and I don't follow laptop technology closely, drive technology is moving away from the parallel (ATA) system.

If it has a SATA controller you will be able to download the drivers from the HP website (they will be included with the original disks supplied with the machine, probably on a floppy disk).
