My brother has a desktop system and is now interested in a laptop computer. I have a Toshiba Satellite so I'm partial to Toshibas.

Of the following 3 brands which would you say is best?

    1. Toshiba
    2. Dell
    3. Sony

    Hello Ace,

    I'll make a few comments (as usual :) ).

Comparisons, pick your price range, find the model/s in that price range and put the model number and review into a Google search. You may find some of those brands pitted against each other, but at least you should find that they have been bench tested (good points, bad points).

Is anything a little more important (CPU speed, RAM, Storage, Graphics, etc)? Does he want it to something in particular?

Usually, while everything is working well, everybody likes their machine. It is when problems arise that sort one from the other. Customer support is quite important to me. If you go to their support website, do they have a good knowledgebase? Are they supporting the models as they get older with updated drivers and upgraded BIOS or do they want you to believe it is not upgradable so you will buy a new one. Do you get a full version of Windows or a recovery disk? What happens if you wish to speak to a technician?

Laptops can do a lot of the things a desktop can do, but most desktops can do them better. I think about getting a laptop, but unless I was going to use it away from home or work (eg., during travel) I will just use a memory stick to transfer my files between desktop machines instead. Negatives I see: It can be lost or stolen (desktops can be stolen, but I rarely ever lose mine :D ) Upgradability of parts and reduced replacement costs. Increased space and airflow. Larger screen sizes...................
Your brother is probably set on getting a laptop so that last paragraph was probably wasted. My sister came up with the idea that she would get a great new laptop. I went through the above points with her and my final offer was that if she did get a laptop she could fix it herself! She now has a great new desktop :D

Those are my thoughts at least.

    Matt

    my 2 cents:

I have several desktops as well as a laptop. I need the laptop for when I travel and also I use it when going to clients' homes/busineses. (it's much easier to carry around than my desktop!)

getting the laptop you need should be regulated by:
    price
features (size, weight, screen size, type of led screen)
desired hardware (device chipsets, # of usb ports, card slot, etc)

Acer makes some good low budget laptops, as do Compaq, Toshiba & HP.
I would NOT get a Dell low budget laptop though, the extended warranty costs 75% of the laptoop!

Were I to get a new laptop I would spend at least 2K and get it from Dell Business section at the Dell site. It would have at least a gig of RAM and graphics w/ its own memory, not shared memory. And I'd get the extended warranty. ALL laptops will require service at some point, this is almost an absolute, IF it gets used regularly.
