I must have made a bad selection because when I view the Thunderbird message list, it no longer displays the sender, just the subject and the time. Where did I go wrong. What I did do was, in view, sorted by subject and then when the list showed, I clicked on Sent to sort by subject and then time.

tenbob: On the right side of the screen just above the scroll bar is a square button with a little box with an arrow. Click on this box and you will get the selection of columns to display. Click on the ones you want. Sounds like your "Sender" column got deleted.

Also you might check to see if the columns have been moved off the screen. Position the cursor over a divide between columns until it changes to a double horizontal arrow and then move the column widths back and forth to see if the sender column is just hiding.

I don't understand where you did what you did. I get it up to sorting by subject, but, then where do you do the Sent?
Do you mean you are trying to sort by subject what is in the Sent folder? If you are looking at that folder, you will see only Recipient. Of course, you can put in the sender, if you have several accounts, as JohnB said, but it is useless if you use only one account.

Thanks John B - Where oh where does one find a description of what the various smears and dots on a page mean? Specifically, where does it say what that little icon means?? I see that putting cursor on it displays its function but is that mentioned anywhere in the help file. I couldn't find it.

Anyway, I did it and it did it and I am a happy (relatively) camper again.

    :D

    Tenbab,
I would never be able to point you to a description in a Help page. They are not much help. That is why I suggest users to look around. I am using NS7.2, so the features have been around for a while. I think that all the symbols have a description which legible by simple mouseover. So the small icon on the upper right, reads: "Click to select columns to display ". However, an identical icon on the left panel, does not display anything on mouseover. In my opinion, the help pages are no better than operating manuals. I get around these problems by simple curiosity. It does not always work, but since I got of time at hand, I can manage.
By the way, I am, still, not sure what you were trying to do. In any event, I am glad that things are sort of working out.

    Help??

Hi tenbob, pleased to hear you got your problem solved. I agree with Westside that most Help? pages are not much help. I find that just poking around and application, it's buttons, options etc. is the best way to find out how things work. You may end up having to re-install or reset defaults, but usually you learn more that way. TB's help takes you out to the Internet and the TB support forum where you can search for your problem. OK if you put in the right search terms.

Westside, what is NS7.2. NS to me, means North Star but they have not been around for almost 30 years.

What I was trying to establish was the list of posts sorted by the subject and then within that, sorted by date. That way I could read the threads as posted and make sense of the discussion.

NS is an abbreviation for Netscape. You may see a lot of abbreviations which are unfamiliar to you, but are to many others, in my signature. For instance, TB=Thunderbird, FF=firefox; SM=Seamonkey. All these are programs.
I understood what you meant about sorting by Subject. You actually said Sent in the original post. That was unclear to me, and still isn't. But, I tried to make some guesses. If you were using the Sent folder, then you would not have seen the Sender, unless you added, but to have the sender in the Sent folder is not too useful, unless you have more than one account.
Anyway, if you wanted to do what you said in this post, and it should refer to the Inbox, you need to select Subject, and then Ascending or Descending, in sort by. I hope you understand why things were not clear to me, reading the original post.
