The instructions for resetting the filters are in post #5 in the thread mattman linked to.

You are getting ahead of yourself - just try that fix that Mattman proposed trying - its not going to hurt anything and it just might put a smile on your face. Don't worry about whether you did or didn't have a "CD Editor" installed.

    ;)

    could be faulty.
Dvd burners seem to more finicky than cd burners.
New burners often have a year warranty.

If you boot to a boot CD that will confirm whether the problem is in Windows.

CD editor...not mentioned in the thread that I linked to. CD/DVD burning software modifies the ASPI layer.

How the "filters" work, sorry, ask MS.

All the resets I know are included in that thread. If you find another, please post it.

After those, a new drive or a reformat will probably work (oops :) ) [Carl did not find that a new drive worked].

    cd stopped working

Locate the UPPER FILTERS value under the following key registry:

    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}

    3. Highlight in right panel > on the EDIT menu , click DELETE, and then OK

    4. Locate the LOWER FILTERS value on the same menu

    5. On the EDIT menu, click DELETE and then OK

I went to that registry key the only thing i found were two keys
one was: 0000 the other: properties:confused:

the only boot cd i have is windows xp if it runs can i stop the instal?
also it it dose run them the problem is window no hardware right:eek:

You will have the option to cancel during all of the first stages. It only creates a "virtual" operating system so you can just turn the power off and nothing will be lost.
Yes, if the Windows boot CD works then the problem is within Windows and is not a hardware problem.
[Just a note that you may have to press a key to boot the CD drive, watch the startup screens.]

Microsoft state that if the filters do not appear in those registry keys, then to uninstall the drive in Device Manager, but you have already done this. I would then try uninstalling the IDE controller and look for updated drivers for the IDE controller (which are the chipset drivers).

You have tried several types of disks in the drive? CD-RW disks can be formatted in a way that is unrecognizable to Windows without special software.

Here are some other checks, although they mainly say to contact the drive manufacturer
