Welcome to the world of Windows XP.
Remember if you look under the hood you will see lots of earlier remnants.
You are in for a whole new share of experiences especially if the computer has Windows XP Service Pack 2 ( SP2)

re permanently solving windows 98 problems

oh im definitely familiar with xp as my other computer has it. i love xp its like going from the stoneage to the jet age. there were some programs in the new one that i didnt like but i took them out and added what i need to personalize it for me. in fact this one has xp professional and only had less than 5 programs in it so it was a snap to get it running with stuff like my other one. i hope this helps everyone that you dont have to buy a brand new computer unless you really want to. a good used reconditioned one is just fine. my motto is why pay more than you have to. :)

well i hope xp isnt the stoneage yet. :) if it is than windows 98 must be older than dirt. seriously for me going from 98 to xp is heaven because when your computer has programs so old in it that you cant update them anymore and it was having to be restored constantly its time to play taps for the old dinosaur and say bye bye to an old friend. :( i just hope they keep xp for a long time cause im not quite ready to try vista.

    Good morning all.
I see a spot for great discussion here.

Why are you folks blaming the OS for something that not be it`s fault ? Win98works just fine when used with software designed for it. I have two machines with 98SE on them and they do all that this one with XP Pro on it does as long as I do not try to install stuff that was not designed for them. They are plenty good enough for the neighbor kids to play with.
Also how well a machine works may not be all the OS fault.

COMBINATIONS of hardware and software may have as much to do with anything as the OS.

A computer is not realy much different than a moter vechile. If it is not designed and/or built properly it may well not do the job we want it too.
ie: If we try to make a 1ton truck do the job of a 2 ton then we may well be in BIG trouble.

And last but not least. If newer stuff will not run on 98, I do not believe we should blame it all on the OS. It may well be the program creatlors fault. He may well not have designed it to run on an older OS.

    Have a nice day

    I agree.
Most computer users have nothing more than dim lamps to illiuminate their room.
In most cases the ability of the computer is way beyond any overkill.
In most cases when you really examine the situations these "power users" are really using any more functions than would be found in Windows 3.1 .
I remember an incident when I went to pick up a locally advertised copy of an original unopened Windows 98 disc which was advertised on a local buy and sell trype newspaper.
The seller informed me that he a major computer expert. Had just upgraded to Windows XP and so had no use for the disc.
Turned out he lived around the corner down the street.
My 13 year old son came "Dad how exciting- a computer expert down the street that I can discuss computers with. How exciting ! "
My 13 year old son asked the alledged expert who told us immeadiately that he is known as the computer expert ( Mr. Computer) at his workplace.
Do you program my son asked ?
    Do you use photoshop?
It turned out that what this fellow did was " mainly MS ( his term) Office. "
    Lol.
The problem usually narrows down to the knob behind the keyboard.

im sorry if i was giving the impression that i was knocking windows 98. not at all. its just my compaq presario and windows 98 just didnt want to play nice together anymore. the fact that the computer came with ie4 and aol 4.0 and so many programs that back in the day were fine but when you went to update them forget it or they were trial versions which expired back in 96. in fact what aggravated the heck out of me was everytime i had to use the restore cd it kept asking me to register my computer. i would laugh and say well its a little late since we bought the computer in 96. and then it would keep reminding me to register so i wouldnt miss out on important updates. i just dont like windows 98 personally as there is no more support for it and since ive used windows xp, xp is more fun and has stuff that can be updated and still has support from microsoft. plus it got very tiresome having to restore the computer just about once a week. i will probably sell the computer to use for playing games on it or just bare bones computing as it might have some more life left in it. :)

    WHY ????

I have a feeling that more than the OS is involved there.

    Again ?????

We find that XP is no more fun than 98 . As I have said before we have 3 machines. 2 with 98SE and 1 with XP Pro. Grandkids, Neices & Nephews have a ball with two of them. Both online and off. My wife and I spend many enjoyable hours playing games between 98SE and XP Pro.

I have used all versions of WIndows from 3.1 on up. And as yet have not seen a problem as long as I use proper software and did not try to make the OS and/or hardware do something that it was not designed to.

90% of my problems have been caused by improper installation. ( alias-Operator error )

Could the computer errors be due with "the knob behind the keyboard" ?

if you are referring to me causing some of the errors i suppose i did. but from what ive heard about people having problems with compaq presarios i know that i will never buy another one. when we bought ours brand new it had a good reputation then slowly the quality went downhill. i dont know if they are any better now that hp makes them or not. i know that hp computers used to be good. i just retired mine because of the fact there wasnt much support from hp for my old computer as far as new updates or upgrades and a lot of the stuff that came preinstalled with the computer is obsolete. and there is no more support for windows 98 anymore either. the only original parts i have for the compaq is the keyboard, speakers, and tower. everything else died a long time ago. i have 2 dells one is 5 years old the other one is 3 years old. the newer one still has everything that came with it still working fine. nothing original on the compaq lasted that long. the older dell which i bought used everything that came with that one new is still working fine.
