Hi all, I am selling one of my laptops and I haven't been able to find any way to change the "registered to" name.

My name is everywhere and I'd like to change it to the friend of mine's who will be taking over the unit.

    Thanks for any input. :)

    Hi CrunchDude!

Do you only want to change the name in "Computer Properties" or everywhere else as well?

Your Name is in many places; your account, installed programs, the registry and probably places I don't know of.

If you want to change it everywhere, a reinstallation is the best, quickest and safest way.

You can do it by editing the registry but you can mess up the computer by editing the wrong value.

    Thanks Christer,

Yea, I thought about reformatting, etc., but let's try the registry method as it is everywhere. I'm up for the challenge. :) Also, where in the computer properties do I make the change?

Thanks again for your detailed response! :)

Start > Run > type in: regedit > OK > Find > type in: Your Name > Find > F3 to continue the search. You will be surprized at the number of entries with Your Name.

Start by changing the name in keys in the context of "registration ". You will have to restart Windows for the changes to take effect when it is related to Windows.

Somewhere in the registry. I have not identified the key.

By the way, changing "Your Name" in any path such as C:\My Documents\Your Name\ ... \ will certainly mess things up.

Maybe creating a new account with administrator privileges for "Your Friend" and deleting the "Your Name" account is a good idea. That would possibly remove most entries with "Your Name" in the registry. One caveat is that programs installed to be used by "Your Name" only will not work for "Your Friend ".

    This is a mine field!

    Navigate to;
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion
    and edit the Reg_Sz strings:

    "RegisteredOrganization "
    "RegisteredOwner "

Or you can go to Kelly's Korner, line 7, right-hand column and download "Change Registered Owner and Organization," a small .reg file that makes it easier.

Hi miz! That makes it much safer and easier. Kelly has a great site that serves a lot of us technoligically challenged users. ;)
