This computer was purchased via a rental center. It was new. It came with a 60 day trial of Norton Internet security 2006 which I used until I could get my own favorite protection. I now want to uninstall it, but it won't let me withut a supervisor's password. I have contacted the rental center, norton (symantic) and dell to get assistance. But no one can tell me what the password is.

It runs on start up, won't let me delete it. I have tried a few things and I get access denied.

I know there are programs that can recover lost passwords, but not sure which one I should use.
    Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

Not sure where your password is, if it is software based or hardware based.

If it is a machine password, you have the potential to be locked out of number of things on your machine. If it is a hardware password you are going to have to investigate procedures for getting those hardware passwords for your particular machine and I would also suggest you get backups of your important data so you don't loose it if you get locked out of your machine during some other problem.

If you are talking about windows xp administrator's password, you can google on variations of that, and you will find some articles about dealing with that. (Note that those things are your risk, and you should back up your data and get assorted operating system and hardware information before doing any of those things in case you would have to reinstall your operating system.)

Here is a link to a Symantec removal tool which may help you remove the program:

Presumably your application is covered what it would remove.

    Norton 2006

Hi Dahkme, Belarc Advisor is a good program to discover what you have on your computer. I wanted to uninstall Norton Anti-virus 2007 recently, so that I could install Norton Internet Security 2007. I went through Control Panel> Add and Remove Programs which seemed to go OK, but I could not install NIS 2007 fully. It would stop at the last operation of formatting. I contacted Symantec Technical assistance and the Techo spent 3 3/4 hours including taking remote control of my computer. He had to go into the root of the computer to completely get rid of all previous Norton values. All OK now. So if you get really stuck get a Norton Technician to remove it. It was free. Hope this helps. Neil. :)
