How do I check my free system resources in Win2000 Pro. I used to right click on My Computer and then Properties in 98 but the tab for performance in that window no longer contains that info. There is a performance monitor but I can figure out how to use it.

    Hi cmjandhoj
    Welcome to the boards!

W2K has a tool called Microsoft Management Console (MMC). To access it, right-click on "My Computer" and select Manage or from Start/Settings/Control Panel/Administrative Tools/Computer Management. This tool allows access to the system utilities. Go to System Services. You'll see a list of currently available services. Look at the status column. Notice that not all of them are started. In the Startup Type column you'll find whether the service is disabled, can be manually started, or automatically started by Windows 2000. Double-clicking on each service opens a properties window with details about the service i. e. name description, startup type, dependencies, path to the executable, etc. You have two options:
1.) Disable it, which means it's no longer available
2.) Change the startup type to manual, which prevents it from automatically starting when W2K boots up.
This is the option we recommend. To change the service startup type from Automatic to Manual, bring up MMC and go to the Services section. Double-click on a service to bring up its properties, where you can change the startup type from Automatic to Manual via a drop-down menu. If you choose option 1, a word of caution: before you disable any service - if you think there's a chance that the service is needed, LEAVE IT ALONE.

    Blatantly ripped from here.
