Can someone check this HijackThis Log ?

Well, I think it's been over a year since I've had any postings in this section. Several days ago, I double-clicked a program that was sitting on my desktop - that I think my kid had placed there - and I believe this program installed some junk. After running this program, each time I boot my machine and login, IE would automatically startup and try to launch a page at http://iesettings update . In the below hijackthis log, I have already checked and gotten rid of the line labelec O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [adstart] "iexplore.exe" "http://iesettingsupdate ". However, I wanted someone on this group to check this log and give me some feedback.

I'll note also that I've suddenly started having a problem with my machine crashing (which I can reproduce) when using IE and clicking the X/close button (and the machine crashes). Like I said, I can reproduce the crash - I'm not sure at this point where to post that information to try and determine what is going on.

I have ran Spybot, Adaware, Spyblaster, and a full Norton AV scan.

02/06/2007: Note from rtstanley...I ran hijack this and deleted the next line: each
time I logged into the computer IE launched and tried to launch this. I believe this got

Below you will find my results and recommendations from your HijackThis! log file analysis. Please read ALL instructions carefully BEFORE proceeding.

Please follow these instructions, exactly, for proper HJT installation. Please place HJT into ITS OWN PERMANANT FOLDER. It must not be installed on the desktop nor in any temp folders.

You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT. Move HijackThis.exe into this folder (C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe). When you run HijackThis.exe from C:\HJT folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary which is easily accessible.


Access your Add or Remove Programs Control Panel by hitting your [Start] button, select Control Panel and click on Add or Remove Programs. Then find the following programs and click the [Change|Remove] button for each, if they are listed. If they are not, continue with instructions

Open Hijackthis, select the [Do a system scan only] button and look over the following entries I have listed, check the boxes [] next to them and press the [Fix Checked] button. I'm not sure what file(s) to delete as far as iexplore.exe. I find this in a lot of places. If I could post graphics in this, I would show you a saved screen shot. In any event, I find these files on my system...

If that file is a rogue it would be in the system32 folder. But if it didn't come up, likely HJT got it when you fixed the entry. But to double check, please go and manually look in there for me.

The log looks fine, how is the machine now, still ok?

I checked in C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32, and the file is not there.

My machine is OK. It's late (early) right now, so sometime tomorrow I will see if I can still crash windows (which I did two times in a row yesterday with a specific sequence of events). If I can still crash it, maybe there is another section on this website to post for help and suggestions?

Question for you and this group: Since I have not really had any spyware/adware issues for quite some time, are there any new tools on the web that you recommend? I currently/pretty much use the following frequently: Spybot, Adaware, Spyblaster, and Norton Internet Security. That's it. Anything else out there that's good to run periodically?

Also, I have not contributed to this site in awhile - and as has been the case over many years, this is a wonderful web site for help. I would like to donate again. How do I do that?

I would add AVG Anti-Spyware as a backup scanner. It will find and remove more than the Spybot and Ad-Aware.

We have a couple of minor things to do then I'd also add what we recommend next for some added security.

We have 3 more things to do, mostly maintenance and then our recommendations:

Empty the TIF (Temporary Internet Files)
Delete all the files in (and any subfolders of) the C:\Windows\Temp folder
The app below will help with temp files.

Also, delete all your cookies, and empty your recycle bin. But remember, by deleting your cookies, you will have to re-enter any passwords and log-in info for any sites you are usually required to do so with.

This would also be a good time to set a new system restore point for your machine.
Set New System Restore Point. Do not do this unless there are no other user accounts to be diagnosed.

Also, as you are an XP user, if there are any other accounts on this machine, they too, must be cleaned with AdAware, Spybot S&D, then HJT. Not all infections are global, nor are all the HJT fixes global. You can post each user account here into this thread, but please, do only one at a time to avoid confusion. It is very rare that anything significant is ever found.

To further prevent the installation of ad/mal/spyware, DL the apps below, which are just as good the fight against ad/mal/spyware as AdAware & Spybot S&D:

SpywareBlaster
With SpywareBlaster v3.5.1 , just DL, install and check for updates, enable Internet Explorer protection, and your done! I don't recommend using IE restricted sites protection as it's not a very large database. Use IE-SPYADs below.

To avoid known malware infested sites from loading in IE install IESPY ADS.
And MVPS Hosts File will accomplish a similar tactic and provide another layer of protection.

And to prevent unknown applications from being inserted to start up on your machine install WinPatrol v10.0.5.

Another thing I would suggest, is to install SiteAdvisor. It gives sites a few different 'ratings' and while not fool proof, a good additional layer of information about many sites.
