I have absolutely no idea what I did to mess this bXP Home box up so badly. All I remember was deleting abunch of unwanted programs to make more disk space. I ran a registry mechanic program and that was when it all went to heck!

My problem now is .. I can not access this box from any others on my network. I can not access any other box from this one on the network.

I tried to run the Network Setup Wizard and it was not even there. Nothing happened when I clicked on it from the Control Panel. After getting lost and confused on the MS site, I was able to patch enough stuff up in the "Services" section to get the wizard to come back up and run.

I run the network wizard and get all the way to the end where the little computers are talking to each other. Then * poof *. I get an error saying "An error occured during configuration of the network on this computer. You can configure your network manually or you can run the wizard again with different settings ".

All I want to do is access this box from the local network. What else do you need to know to help!

    Thank you so much.

    Welcome to the board.

Nice work - not to worry, you aren't the first and won't be the last. Getting you back to some semblance of normal operation may require a few different approaches.

Commentary: One can safely uninstall programs from Add/Remove Programs in the Control Panel but deleting programs is a potential recipe for disaster.

    What to do now?

    1. If your registry program saved a copy of all that it removed, restore those keys and then run a System Restore to a point in time before you started "cleaning" up your computer. Reboot and then, assuming stability, use add/remove to uninstall your unwanted programs. Also, download RegCleaner, install it and follow up by removing leftover registry entries associated with any program you are 100% sure you uninstalled. Leave all other entries alone. If no go, then ........

    2. From the run window or a command prompt, type SFC /Scannow with your XP CD in the CDROM drive. When finished, download and install RegSeeker and run Clean the registry using the automatic feature. If no go, then ........

    3. Using your XP CD, reboot and do a Repair Install.

Post back with your progress and help will be provided as needed. I'd also lose that registry program (after you've restored your previous settings and the keys that were removed).

    Good Luck.
    ;)

Thank you Rockster for the encouragement. I did not "delete" the programs. I did uninstall them. I did go through and "delete" the files in the program files directory that were left. I do know better than to just "delete ".

I did do a restore of the Registry Mechanic. Still had the problem. Part of the issue is that I run an web radio station. This box contains half my library. I panicked. :)

Still don't know what I did, but I did already do a repair from my Windows CD. That even made the problems worse. I was able to get the internet connection back on that box last night. It just will not recognize the network. (Or be recognized by the network).

I am running the Windows File Protection scan right now. I will let you know how that turns out.

Part of the main problem with many of us that mess things up is we panick and make things worse. I wish that Microsoft would supply valium with their product. * I cry at night wishing for a simple DOS prompt again *

    Do we all remember:

    Hello voice23,

I'm moving this thread to the Networking section and changing this thread title one more time.

What you and anyone else need to do is have an idea of how to recover from mistakes:

When modifying the registry, two ways to have a backup, one is to create a System Restore point to go back to, and backing up the registry directly.

Start > run > type regedit > ok
Tool bar at top > File > export
Export to a file name such as regbackup
Double clicking on this file will restore the Registry.

    Regards - Charles

Good point - and lesson learned. I did restore from the registry mechanic software. But I did NOT do a system restore point.

GOT IT!!! Running through the myriad of MS support, I ran accross this one ,,,

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/825826/en-us

In it, I found that the under section 2. c., one of the settings in the system services was turned off. I don't know how, but it was. I no more than turned it back on and restarted the service, than the box showed up on my network.

Sure wish I knew what I did - so I can not do it again.

Thanks for the support folks. I do appreciate it.
