Hesitation and slow computer

I'm sure this has been addressed before, but I couldn't find it.

I've looked at other postings and seen the other fixes for slow computers. I've downloaded and used CCleaner and XCleaner. I've already got AdAware and Spybot.

What happens is that my computer is slow to load upon bootup. It also hesitates about every 10 seconds. What I mean is that I could be writing this email and the letters won't appear for a few seconds, then all of the sudden, the letters that didn't appear will all of the sudden, appear. It's like pouring a beaker of water at a certain rate, stopping, then pouring again.

You have quite a few RAM/Processor intensive applications running:

Roxio - Nero - HP processes none of which should be running unless being used, make them on demand.

Both Yahoo and Google tools bars - potential conflicts

Symantec, and I notice you had McAfee running at one time - you went from the fire to the frying pan

You can start by reading this post that links to info on startups/processes and how to disable them http://www.windowsbbs.com/showthread.php?t=39425

And to narrow down the problem, disable all the startups and then add them back in one at a time.

Go into Task Manager (ctl+alt+del) > performance tab. How much memory do you have? CPU usage? In the process tab, look at how much memory these processes are taking.

I downloaded and used XClean, CCleaner, and the latest HJT. I can't figure out how to make Roxio, Nero, and HP "on-demand ". I'm using 2 - 5%CPU generally. It does spike up to 100% upon occasion, which I can't figure out why. I've got about 785 GB of total Physical Memory; 375 GB of available; and 522 GB of System Cache.

In the Task Mgr, I've got 6 svchost.exe running. One Local, 2 Network, and 3 System. They're using about 44K of memory. Is this normal? I also can't seem to kill the msmsgs.exe. Any suggestions? I don't really use Netscape anymore and couldn't seem to kill the earlier versions anyway. Is it advisable to uninstall?

Finally, my browser seems to crash for no apparent reason. I'm using Firefox and have a basic version of Internet Explorer (that I rarely use...don't like it).

Oh, BTW, you mentioned that I have Symantec and used to have McAfee. Where did you see McAfee? So, I went from the frying pan into the fire? Do you think that McAfee is better or Norton SystemWorks or what's wrong with it?

I to had mcafee and then norton. Few months ago changed to AVG.

Got rid of norton because seemed everyone said it slowed down puter.

Got some speed back.

But I am new to this bbs.

Interesting, Bob. I see that I do have a lot of Norton/Symantec **** running. Dang, and I just re-up'd my NAV.

I thought I saw some dregs of McAfee, but looking through the log, I'm mistaken. I meant McAfee is worse than Symantec.

In the link I gave on disabling startups, did you try Mike Lin's programs? - Startup Monitor and Startup Control. If they don't do it, there are few apps that are stronger.

It is normal.

Bring up Msn Messenger. Tools > Options > General Tab and untick starting with Automatically run with Windows logon.

Yes, should uninstall it. Always advisable to uininstall something you don't use anymore.

Not necessarily a different opinion but Charlesvar and BBBobins are right on the money. And, Mike Flynn's approach to removing Norton (BBBobins linked thread) is one approach that will work. As to the $ you spent on Norton - call it tuition - chalk up the learning experience and use something like AVG free. StartupCPL (Charlesvar recommendation) should be considered as a must have. Once installed, you will find Startup listed in the control panel - thanks to Mike Lin.
