Help...must be overlooking the obvious here...

Setup ...Dsl modem --> Netgear wireless router--1st Pc w/Xp Pro hardwired--
    2nd Pc w/98se wireless card---3rd laptop w/98se wireless

Everything works fine till Zonealarm gets installed on PC #1 ...Zonealarm pops up a warning that IP Addr 192.168.1.1 is trying to access your computer and proceeds to block it ...which it turns out is the address of the router itself...no big deal till it dawns on me that now the router itself is locked out and wifi is shut down...fixing it was easy ...but it confuses me...can somebody give me a clue ...why zonealarm decided the router was a threat?
The reason being, even tho hardwired, the router asigns PC#1 an IP address of 192.168.1.2 ....can't get my brain wrapped around what is going on...

    Cheers
    Jake

Zonealarm will consider ALL attempted access a threat, depending on the rules you set up or the level of protection it is operating at. You need to config ZA to your liking. The router will regularly maintain a connection w/ a network adapter, basically something like this:
    router: "are you there? "
    pc1 adapter: "I am here "
    router: "OK "
    pc2: "looking for 192.168.1.2 "
    router: "OK "
    router" "who is 192.168.1.2? "
    pc1: "I am
    router: "OK "
router: "I have a message for you from pc2 "
    pc1: "OK, send "
    router: "more technical jargon "
    adapter: "more technical jargon "

Tony ...thanks...that much I understand...be patient with me now.. ...

What I am trying to figure out...neither of the other 2 machines on the wireless ports ever noticed the ***.***.1.1 address even existed...both using last freeware version of zonealarm...

So next thought comes to mind, is it something to do with being hardwired, or something Windows Xp is looking at....or did one of the other 2 or 3 wireless networks running on 11g around here get tangled up?

Could be a separate network nearby but unlikely because local ips (192.x) are not routable outside a lan. And the netgear default ip is usually 192.168.0.1, which is what is confusing here.

I'm sure I'll get "reprimanded" for saying this, but I never use software firewalls with a router. The router already blocks unsolicited incoming requests and I always know what my computers are sending outbound. Personally, I haven't used softwalls on my network since 2001, and that includes my servers too. Sorry I can't advise re zone alarm, I suggest looking at the help files or the za support site, or wait for another here to respond.

Tony ...Thanks again...I'm not sure how the default Netgear xxx.xxx.0.1 got changed, I did not set this up originally...but what is interesting here...after trying "Incredimail" (spelling??) ....The XP machine slowed to a crawl and started picking up worms...hence my advice to her to get ZA...after removing "Incredimail" ...Hdcleaner finds 300+ invalid registry entry's...98% of them related to Incredimail ...otherwise, I was like you, the router is actually double firewalled ...so I figured redundancy was overkill...

At anyrate, maybe I'll get lucky and somebody else will read this that has bumped into this

    Thanks again
    Cheers
