When I try to attach a file, the filename appears in the Attach Box in the header. OK. But sometimes the whole file appears also in the main text and when I send the e-mail, it takes a long time due to the increased size of the main body. I don't want this, how can I prevent it to happen? What controls that the attachment is only in the "Attach" box only and sometimes in both. By the way, a friend told me, that he tries for a long time to add the attachment file to the body of the e-mail, and can not figure it out how to do it. Just the opposite of my problem.

It's a matter of what IE is configured to display. They call that plug-ins. You can't expect it to recognize and open every file format that has ever been developed. It just hits the high spots and opens the most popular ones, the rest are carried along as attachments and it's up to you to take them outside the IE applet and have the necessary program to open them with. If you have a specific program and there is a plug-in for it, you're in luck. If not, you must open it with the associated software that you have (or have not and need to get) on your drive.

Think about what you are proposing. It would be nice if one single program could open every file format known to man. It's not in your future or mine I'm afraid. ;)

I don't think it makes any size difference whether the IE applet is able to display the attachment or not, it still takes up the same amount of space. It's just one of the frills that you get with IE.

Use plain text format in the email instead of HTML. It's probably set to send mail in HTML by default. You can either change the default to plain text or you can leave HTML as the default and just change it for the ones you want to.

To change the default, in OE click tools>options>send and where it says mail sending format, choose plain text. If you do this, you can choose to use HTML in any email you make by clicking on the format menu in the email and choosing Rich Text (HTML) in the menu.

To keep HTML as the default and just change the format for individual emails to plain text, open a new message window, click the format menu and select plain text. If you're prompted with a warning that all previous formatting will be lost (something like that anyway) , ignore it.

This will reduce the size of the email some because of the lack of the HTML code in the email. If the attachment is a picture it won't show in the email itself if you use the plain text formatting option. They'll have to click on the attachment to open it.
