I am trying to speed up my printing on my work network. The printers used to be hooked up to workstation 1 which operates as a POS system and the speed for printing was good. Reason for getting the printer off this computer is that it would get shut down after business hours not allowing other workstations to print. Went to a dedicated computer operating as a printserver (2.66MHz with 256Meg of Ram) running a old OKI Microline 320 Turbo and HP Laserjet 3330. The delay between initiating a print cycle and actual printing can be as high as 1 minute.
    Any help would be appreciated.

    :) :)

Personally, I'd use a dedicated hardware print server rather than a PC. For example, a HP Jetdirect 175x. That way you don't have to worry about what the PC print server OS is doing, the unit is small, and it is easy to have it on for as long as you need the printer on. To be honest I was sold on the dedicated print server route years ago, and now always buy printers with built in print servers. It makes life so much easier.

However, if your budget is tight and you want to use an old PC then these guides may help:

Getting bored and need to get into something so here goes what may be nothing.
I also gave up on sharing a Printer or having it on just one PC a long time ago. I bought an HP5850 which plugs directly into my Router so that it available to any machine at any time.( as long as I don't forget and shut it off LOL )
Taking the time and doing some work at making each machine a standalone unit has proven well worth it.
And at the same time has given my Wife and I many enjoyable hours of fun playing games between them.
Yes. It does mean that some things may need to be installed on each machine. But AGAIN, has proven well worth it. Nancy LOVES beating me at Cribbage.

And last but certainly not least.

If at 70+ years old I can do it, it must be possible. I just hope and pray that nothing realy goes worng because I may well be out of luck

I just did some thinking ( for a change ) and did some checking. The printer does not plug directly into the Router. It is plugged into a Worlgroup switch which is then plugged into the Router.

All three machines and the printer plug into the Workgroup Switch.
