A quick question here from someone who is not thinking right.

My brand new (3 weeks old) Dell XPS computer took a dump last night and after spending some time on the phone with the techie he thinks the motherboard is shot. When they replace the motherboard will all my other stuff be intact. I have downloaded and set up my machine just as I like it and it has taken me the past three weeks to get it this way. Please tell me that when they replace the motherboard everything will be just as it was.

    TIA, Lorreen

Replacing the MOBO does not change what is on your hard drive.

The problem is when they replace your board they probably will do the recovery disk thing and that will take it back to day 1.

If you can get across to them to only put in the MOBO drivers and do not disturb your HDD. Otherwise, If the computer works at all, you have to clone your drive and save it on an external drive, then restore it when the computer gets back.

There may be other ways known only to the hardware guru bunch. One of them may wander by and offer some of their voodoo tricks to get you out of the fire and back into the frying pan.;)

No magic tricks here - if your HDD is sitting in a non-working computer, you'll need to slave to another machine to either create a ghost image of your hard drive or at least, to copy off all your important data.

Whether or not Dell will "re-image" your HDD, I have no idea. It would seem a bit invasive and a little "over-the-top ". If they replace your defective mainboard with the identical mainboard (which I'm sure they will) your machine should boot right up with your current hard drive.

If they do re-do your HDD, they will not be responsible for your lost data - that's just the way it works. Repair personnel are never responsible for lost data.

Thanks guys for the info. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the harddrive is intact and will remain that way after the new motherboard. I can't believe this. The machine is less than two months old and I've always bought Dells and have not had an prior problems. I hope this is the start of issues with this machine. I'll let you know how it works out.
