What's wrong with my security settings? What should I check? I receive "page can't be displayed" every time I try downloading. Something is obviously wrong with my security settings. Help please. :(

    Hello Yankee Hater,

    Are using IE6 or IE7?

Under the IE tool bar, do you get a message bar about security settings not allowing display?

    Regards - Charles

    Thanks for the help

I'm using IE6. No security message pops up. This is the standard response:

    The page cannot be displayed
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser settings.

    --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

    Please try the following:

Click the Refresh button, or try again later.

If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is spelled correctly.

To check your connection settings, click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Connections tab, click Settings. The settings should match those provided by your local area network (LAN) administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).
If your Network Administrator has enabled it, Microsoft Windows can examine your network and automatically discover network connection settings.
If you would like Windows to try and discover them,
    click Detect Network Settings
Some sites require 128-bit connection security. Click the Help menu and then click About Internet Explorer to determine what strength security you have installed.
If you are trying to reach a secure site, make sure your Security settings can support it. Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section and check settings for SSL 2.0, SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, PCT 1.0.
Click the Back button to try another link.

Cannot find server or DNS Error
    Internet Explorer

I can't find a place to check PCT 1.0, but the other settings are fine.

Appears scripting may be the issue

Problem is I have no idea what to do. Can you direct me somewhere that can explain how to check the settings with instructions on how to reset them properly?

Have you cleared out your TIF file? Have you added the Microsoft site to your trusted zone?

How about DNS flush or denied by your HOSTS file or listed in your restricted zone. Have you tried any other browser. I use Firefox and have no problem with the link charlesvar supplied above. Also no problem with IE6 going to the site.

Also, have you checked your internet options>security settings>trusted sites>advanced tab download section?

Thanks so much for your help

Using the denied hosts advice, finally figured out that for some reason, Spybot was blocking Microsoft. Very happy am I.
While I have the floor, how about one more longstanding problem that I've never been able to solve. When I hit Ctrl/Alt/Delete to view my control panel, it only flashes on the screen before disappearing. Any idea how to fix that?

Kelly's Korner is a good place. Pick A-Z and "T" and scroll down to Task Manager. I do assume you meant that instead of Control Panel?

Apologies, was talking about Task Manager

However, nothing at Kelly's corner worked. Ctrl/Alt/Delete flashes the task manager on the screen, only for it to disappear after 3/4 of a second..

If Kelly's doesn't work I haven't a clue. Are you running updated anti virus and malware detectors? You might try some online scanners just to verify your installed stuff. Does msconfig and regedit work ok?
