I have a Sony VGN-BX540B with three built in USB 2 ports, after a failed loading of a USB picture frame I received for Christmas I can't reload it as it will do nothing and now when I use the USB ports I get a message that they would work better if I used a USB 2 port. Do I just unistall all the USB controllers in Devise Manager and reboot to get back to normal. Running XP Pro

    Mattman,

Have attached a photo of the Device Manager, no updated drivers for my computer showing on Sony site. Thanks for the reply.

THAT'S interesting, there are VIA drivers installed along with Intel. Do you have an additional USB controller system, like a hub or a PCMCIA USB adapter?

    Try running download #1 here:
    http://downloadfinder.intel.com/scr...XP+Professional&lang=eng&strOSs=44&submit=Go!
It will check your system first and won't run if it is the wrong one.

If there does not seem to be an improvement, uninstall those controllers in Device Manager.

    Mattman,
I do not have any hubs connected but do hook to my docking station at times. I also installed a multi card reader once and the digital picture frame has a USB port on it. I will look on the link you gave me and see if I can figure out which I have. Thanks

I looked up the specs for it. It has an Intel 915PM or 915GM chipset, so there should be no problem running that update. I mentioned that it wouldn't run if it was the wrong one in case you may have been concerned.

    Mattman,
I ran the Intl file and it said it installed fine. I tried pluging in the digital picture frame and it brought up the "will work better if you use a 2.0 port" and then this screen attached. On the other two ports it has no message but when I open the drive there is nothing showing in the drive but there is if I access it on the port that brings up the error. Which files would I uninstall?

So it is slightly different now, but still does not run as USB 2.0.

I think there are 3 possibilities.

There is a problem with the controller drivers, but is that a clash between the Intel and the VIA drivers?

Is the picture frame self-powered or is it drawing power from the USB port? Would the drive/mass storage device be drawing a lot of power? Laptops do not have a lot of power for USB devices so you may need to get a powered USB hub.

The picture frame has software installed, maybe that has caused the problem.

Maybe you should get a self-powered hub first. You say some of the ports do not seem to be working. I hope they are not getting overloaded.

Try uninstalling all the listings titled "Intel ". Still the same, try the VIA listings, but watch when the VIA get installed again (docking station or picture frame).

Try uninstalling and reinstalling any software that came with the picture frame.

    Mattman,
Two of the three USB ports act as 2.0. I only have one device pluged in at a time. I have a bluetooth mouse.I tried it [digital frame] on my old Pent II 300 Dell laptop running Win 2000 with 1.1 USB and it loaded and runs fine with no problems. My Sony is only about 6 months old but may be due to something I tried to install. Thanks for all of your replies.

Strange, that would imply that there are two different controllers in the system somewhere. Since I would expect that because the system is Intel based, the VIA drivers are for some type of added hardware. Did you have all the hardware disconnected when you uninstalled/reinstalled? I wonder if it might have something to do with the Bluetooth. It looks like both sets of controllers are adding or controlling the ports, because you seem to have far too many hubs.
If the digital frame was connected at the time, because you say it has an "extention" port, maybe that has the VIA controller.

I personnally, would get a self powered hub. Althought the frame ran on the older computer I would expect that it may be a little more robust as far as power supply to the ports would go. I looked at the information about USB for one laptop (Toshiba I think), they recommended that you use a powered hub with more than one(!) USB device.

See if you might be able to find out why that VIA controller is getting installed.
