I am running a machine with Windows XP. I have two users on the machine. I use outlook express and my wife uses Thunderbird for email. The set up has been working fine until the last week. My wife kept getting intermittent error messages that the SMTP server was not available. I have had no problems in my account. Today she can not send at all. Mine works fine. I have reviewed the server settings and have redone them. Still does not work. Called the ISP. They told me that since I can send and receive ok that there is something wrong with Thunderbird. I set up her account in outlook express and is works. I do not have a clue on where to look in Thunderbird to solve this problem. help.

    Hi Robert,

    Welcome to the BBS!

Thunderbird's SMTP settings are found in Tools > Account Settings > Outgoing Server (SMTP). You obviously know the proper setting, so make sure that it's correct, and set it as the default.

Then, select the account name (top item in the Account Settings window) and make sure that the default SMTP setting is shown in the Outgoing Server (SMTP) window.

If that doesn't solve the problem, try using the SMTP setting you use in Outlook Express and see if you can send a message to your OE account. If not, I'd suggest reinstalling Thunderbird.

BTW, which version is she using? The current release is 1.5.0.9.

    Hi Robert,

    Ditto Jim's welcome! :)

This Mozilla Thunderbird KB Article has several suggestions that may very well apply to the problem you're having, due to its "out of the blue" onset:
