I did a search online for lists of things you don't need on startup. I found out that ITUNESHELPER didn't need to be there and QTTASK didn't need to be there, either. I've unchecked them. My PC had been taking forever to load when I turned it on every morning and I knew that ITUNES was one of the culprets from reading blogs on it. Now, my question is this: I have more programs that I am not sure about and couldn't find in any lists online, therefore, I am gathering all of my computer friends here to help me figure out what stays and what goes. OK? Great! The first list was recommend as keepers. The second I couldn't find. I'm not even sure what some of them are.

    KEEPERS

    PRINTRAY
    CCAPP
    POINT32
    CTFMON (.exe)
    GOOGLE UPDATER

    COULDN'T FIND

    COLOREAL
    SRMCLEAN
    CHKADMIN
    SETHOOK
    OSCHECK
    GSTART
    ADOBE READER SPEED LAUNCH
    ADOBE READER SYNCHRONIZER
    APC USP STATUS

I hope I can clear these up as it's still taking it's time to load every morning.

    THANKS!

    :)

    ADOBE READER SYNCHRONIZER
Couldn't find a specific detailed description on this one, but if it's starting up, more than likley you don't really need it.

APC USP STATUS<<<Is this supposed to be 'APC UPS STATUS'?

Hi Panda. You can go to the link below and search for each of those that you don't know about. I searched for all of them there and with only a couple exceptions, you'll be able to find out what most of them do. Look under the status column to see if it's needed or not. The key for the status column is at the top of the page.

There is no entry there for these two.
    APC USP STATUS
    ADOBE READER SYNCHRONIZER

Also, the GSTART one is questionable. The closest thing they list is GStartup. To find out if it's the same thing as GSTART, compare the name of the file shown in msconfig to the file name under the "command or data" column on the web page.

I'm not sure what the Adobe thing does but my guess is that it's not necessary. If it were me, I'd turn it off. I can always be changed back if something doesn't work because of it. My guess is though, that if you just use the reader for reading pdf files every now and then like most of us, you probably don't need it. Final decision is up to you. I'll see if maybe I can find more about it. If I do, I'll let you know.

As for the APC one, I think USP is a typo on someone's part. My guess is that it's supposed to be UPS and there is an entry there if it is UPS. I can save you the trouble of checking on that one though. This is something you want to let run in my opinion. It's software that's connected to your APC UPS and handles shutting down your PC should the power go out when you aren't around to do it. Things like that. I have an APC UPS too. I let this process run myself.

AWESOME! Great feedback, you two! This is really a big help. And, yes, I had a brain fart while typing UPS! It does belong to my battery backup. Disabling most of these should help speed up my startup in the morning. I will let you all know how that went.

Thanks, again. This is why I ALWAYS come here for answers.

    :)

Btw, as some items are not always required at start up, you can use a start up manager, like WinPatrol v10.0.5.0. It also has a new feature, currently in beta, which lets the user set items to start at a specific time after initial boot.

The beta is here. It's very stable, Bill is not one to let something out which is not almost near final release.

Just be sure to read the manual. ;)

Read this regard Adobe Syncronizer. i don't find it necessary.

    The Adobe Synchronizer

Another thing I found unnecessary was the Google Updater. In fact I got quite PO'd at Google when that tried to place itself in my firewall. I got rid of the Google Toolbar period. In fact all add-on toolbars are unnecessary.

I second that, more trouble than they're worth.

IE7's Search Window where user's choice can be the default is a better alternative if searching is the primary rationale for Google's tool bar.

I must admit to being almost to the point of uninstalling it myself. I've gotten so used to having it that I've battled it thus far but I'm getting to the point of being tired of fighting it. There is a service associated with it. I've turned that off, and denied all access to it in my firewall so it doesn't really matter if it tries to access the internet I guess but it still sort of ticks me off. It fills my event log with errors due to the fact it can't connect and that's no big deal but it shouldn't have to be. It seems to me it's beginning to get rather intrusive. As I said, I'm contemplating uninstalling it all together. You shouldn't have to go through all of this to eliminate this type of thing. Yes, more than likely, there's an option somewhere that will make it stop but why should I have to search the internet to find out which one it is. It should be obvious but it isn't. In my opinion, it should be.

These are the programs I unchecked in startup:

    COLOREAL
    SETHOOK
    QTTASK
    ITUNESHELPER
CTFMON (exe...this one scared me until I saw it was the .exe and not a .dll)
    both ADOBES

A few others I am still contemplating.

I agree about the Google Toolbar. With the new IE update to version 7, I use the new search section a lot when shopping and can just as easily use Google in there. I do like the AUTOFILL feature, tho, in Google. Use it quite often. Spellcheck is nice, too. The best part is the pop up stopper. Will wait and see on that one.

Thanks, again, so much for all your help out there.

TEMERC...will check out that WinPatrol. Looks interesting.

    :)
