When creating a partition for a backup image of Vista must the partition be a Primary or can it be a logical? I know that a logical will not be bootable and thats the way I would want it, but the reason I ask is when ever I need to copy that image back will that be a problem for the partition that will need to be bootable? :)

You don't say which imaging software you are using, but in True Image you are given the choice of Primary or Logical when you start the restore,so no problem.
There is no need to prepare a Primary partition for a back-up image.

Data Lifegaurd Tools is something that came with a WD HD I purchased. It has a option to copy all files from a partition. :) I used Partition Magic to create a new partition.

Can Data Lifeguard image an OS or is it just backing up files? You can't restore an OS from ordinary files Fang.

    Vista's Onboard Partitioning?

Does Vista have any onboard partitioning s'ware that does what P. Magic does? I just saved my kiester from certain disaster if I hadn't had a dual boot partition, because I was able to look at the bad one like a back door that wouldn't boot and get what I needed off of it from the good one. I'd think MS would've incl. that by now.

    Hello gplea,

Yes it does thru Disk Management, same as XP. Its limited though.

Right click My Computer > Manage > Disk Management and right click on the drive > create a partition. Will do if there is unalocated space and it doesn't resize once a partition is established.

EDIT: Noticed a new option on Vista's Disk Management Console - right click on a partition > Shrink Volume. Haven't tried this yet.

    Regards - Charles
