I am going to purchase a relatively high end desktop computer. The 2 key things that I'm unsure of what I want is the hard drive and the memory type. Will I even see a performance difference with a SCSI hard drive in a few-device desktop PC? Should I give up the larger disk capacity in an IDE drive for a faster SCSI drive? And any suggestions with memory would much appreciated. I'm looking to get about 1 gig of it.

    Keith

P.S. this computer will be used mainly for processing large amounts of data and managing a company website with Frontpage.

    [UPDATE - 1:43pm PST]
I forgot to mention that I was looking at a 2.4 ghz P4 Dell Precision 340. Also, can someone tell me why 1 gig of 2-RIMM PC800 memory costs over $400 more than the same 4-RIMM chips?

It sounds like you are well on your way to spending a sizeable sum of money. You may also want to check out that TRSDOS operating system, I'm told its state of the art for WYSIWYG equipment.

SCSI has the big advantage of RAID (I dont DO EIDE RAID, ever) but it depends on whether performance or data integrity is important to you.

Compaq do an EVO W8000 workstation thats as good as any at this end of the market - might be worth a look

AndyO, why no EIDE RAID? I'm just getting together the stuff for my PC and I was thinking of going RAID-0 with a pair of WD 80GB. I just don't know if it will really (real world) speed things up.:D

In my opinion buying a Dell computer and what they have to offer in the high end is a good choice.

Supporting my opinion is a recent commentary about the future business model strategized by Micheal Dell that for their future systems, the product will not be proprietary and they will stay standard. Also, they are moving away from just PCs into servers and supporting systems.

Do not unknowingly get locked into a proprietary situation that may have an undisclosed future cost in time and money. My 5 years experience with Dell and a few different products is unblemished both in quality and support.

Unfortunately, purchasing from a manufacturer does not provide wide latitude for components, but Dell's systems meet the competition for any niche at a reasonable price.

SCSI & RAID more than just bug spray...

I love SCSI but will be honest - 2x the performance for 8x the price...

And I run a true Redundant Array of INEXPENSIVE Drives - I have 4 UW drives striped as drive R: - these older 5400 rpm 40MB/s (peak) drives reach the peak of there capability when striped.

For my 'XP' drive I use a Seagate Cheetah U160 SCSI...

The system has 4 scsi controllers. - RE: EIDE raid - Its OK but won't show any major improvement without a special controller.
