The FAT32recovery Partition E:\RECOVER on my Medion PC has a folder which has been renamed to something with non-asci characters (something like ´¯ ). I can no longer access this folder, nor can I rename or delete it from within windows or from a command prompt.
If I browse this partition, using Windows Explorer, it causes Windows Explorer to freeze. When explorer is closed (via EndTask) it will not reopen again in the current Windows session.
Anyone got any ideas on how to rename or delete this folder.

    Any help greatly appreciated.

I think you'll find that that partition is strictly for use of the system when you invoke an OEM recovery command. Browsing it serves no purpose and even if you could delete things from it, you would be corrupting the intent and probably would lose the option of using it to recover your drive to the original condition.

I generally delete partitions of that kind soon after the guarantee period ends. There are much better ways to image the drive and restore it.

    Thanks for reply
The corrupt folder (I think) is not one of the folders required for a System Recovery to factory defaults. It is a folder placed there by some program (AVG anti-virus maybe) which has become corrupt.
I wish to keep the E:\Restore partition and the system recovery files but it is no good to me unless I can get rid of this corrupt folder. Any ideas?

Have you ever used Drive Image? I think it makes such a partition to store its images in.

Perhaps try MoveOnBoot, a freeware, which can often delete troublesome files and folders by marking them and doing the work upon reboot before Windows loads. Worth a shot.

    MoveOnBoot

There is a trick to deleting entire folders with MoveOnBoot since it was mainly designed for deleting files. To delete a folder, you must open the MoveOnBoot main program window and drag the folder into the action area. I have used this method before with success. As I recall, it is sometimes necessary to have MoveOnBoot rename the folder and then it can be deleted by normal means. You may have to experiment with it using defferent methods since an outright delete by MoveOnBoot may not work on a folder.

Tried MoveOnBoot, but computer locked up during boot, so it seems that MoveOnBoot is unable to recognise the corrupt folder in order to delete it.
    Any more suggestions?

Consider reformatting the partition if you can tolerate losing the data on it. If you have valued data there, then consider imaging the partition, then reformatting it and plucking your valuables from the image onto the new space.

Good luck. Please post back so others can share your method. Ghost should do fine.

I would be remiss if I didn't mention that if you have room you could just drag the good stuff from the partition to another, leaving the corrupt folder, and reformat it to destroy the corrupt folder. What?

    Success.
Used DriveImage XML to create an image of the Recovery partition (E:), then formatted drive E and restored all (except the corrupt folder).
No more problems, except that I will never know what was contained in that folder.

Thanks for the update. I'm sure some poor soul that finds himself in the same spot will also thank you later down the road. It just goes to show there's more than one way to skin a cat.

    All the best.
