I have just installed a DVD Player (actually CLIPREX) which, in the process, offered to set itself as my Default DVD Player. I said 'yes' but it didn't - I still get Windows MP.
Is there a way to set a default player other than Windows Media Player?

You don't say you've tried it. In WMP, go to the Tools menu -> Options -> File Types, uncheck DVD Video. Hope it's that simple.

    Thanks for your reply, Mattman.
Unfortunately it made no difference - insert a DVD and up comes WMP as before. Is there something elseI should be setting?

    Hi TonyT -
Minor problem. You say 'choose an aplication' - presumably a DVD Plyer application. Trouble is, they only application is 'Play using WMP'! Somehow I need to add my other DVD player to this list so I can choose it, but how?

Put a dvd in the drive and cancel out of the autoplay dialog. Then double click the dvd icon in Mc Comp. Then rt click the .IFO file and select open-with & choose your program, and be sure to check the box "always use this program... "

    Hi TonyT -
Thanks for your reply. After rt-click of DVD icon I had to open the VIDEO_RM file to find the .ifo file. So far so good, but no further. Unfortunately there is no 'Open With...', only 'Open'. What now?
After I replied last I discovered that TweakUI allows items to be added to the 'Autoply' menu so that one can include one's own options. However, that didn't work either!! All I got was the 'Microsoft needs to close...' messge and no player program, even tho' its works from 'All Programs' and the shortcut. I :( wouldn't have thought this was going to be so difficult!

repeat the above and hold down the Shift key while rt clicking the IFO file, that should give the "open with" option.

one more thing, is this the free version of CLIPREX? If so, get rid of it because it installs spyware on your comp, the paid version may also do that as well, and THAT could be the reason autoplay won't work with it! A lot of bad reviews for that product on the www.

    Hi again, TonyT -
Thanks for the additional info - I shall try that, but in view of your comments and the reviews you pointed me to, it won't be with CLIPREX! Like some of the reviews noted, I also had horrendous XP problems, which it did not occur to me were a result of CLIPREX, but it all fits. I finally had to reload a backup, and everything is now OK.

I was lucky, my laptop came w/ a cd copy of WinDVD 5 a few years ago...hehe...it's on several comps at my home now. Most dvd drives come w/ a a copy of some sort of dvd player now. Check it out, it may be cheaper to buy a new dvd drive and accompanying software than it would be to buy a dvd player software!

    Hi Tony T -
Sorry, rtclick with shift still doesn't get 'Open with...', just 'Open' My DVD drive was a bare item - no software wwith it. Nero, which came with the drive which went u/s, won't run with this one because it's not the drive it was bundled with! I'll check prices.

    Hi again Tony T -
Following your suggestions I got rid of Cliprex and installed PowerDVD and I managed to get 'play with PowerDVD' to replace 'play with Win. Media player' in the autoplay options. HOWEVER, if I click on it, NOTHING happens!! PowerDVD works perfectly when called directly (shortcut or .exe file), so any thoughts as to why this is (not) happening? More suggestions gratefully received!

    Hi Tony T -
No dice again, I'm afraid. All that unchecking 'DVD Video' does is to remove 'WMP' from the list of actions - clicking the 'PowerDVD' action still does nothing at all. Incidentally, I found I had to exit the 'File Types' window with Cancel - exiting via OK promptly reset the check mark that I had unchecked!!!

    Hi Tony T -
You won't believe this - I HAVE FOUND THE SOLUTION!!!! In PowerDVD 'configuration' settings there is a check box 'play DVD on insertion'. Uncheck this box and BINGO!!! It all works!! Presumably PowerDVD has started and Autoplay stops it in its tracks, but it's not obvious why it doesn't restart when I choose its option in the Autoplay window - however, if I call PowerDVD at this point it offers me the option to 'resume from where it was stopped', so it suggests it was running when Autoplay options appeared. Anyway, I shall breathe a sigh of relief and not pursue it any further.
Many thanks for all your suggestions, several of which were useful in their own right, quite aside from the problem itself. Ishall have to make some notes on all this before I forget the details.
