I am using a toshiba satellite laptop as client. Browsing with IE7.0 and Firefox 2.0 is very slow at times. Example: if I open IE7.0 or Firefox to www.msn.com and click on a link to one of the news stories the page loading indicator justs continues to turn but page is not loaded. This laptop is connected using a Netgear wireless rangemax router and I am only 8 feet away. Also when I close either of these browers the system hangs and the screen goes blank. What could be the issue?

If you did not change anything on your laptop
    If it was faster before
    please check virus or malware

I checked for virus and spyware using zonealarm security suite, webroot spy sweeper and trojan remover, nothing was detected.

    What happens if you:

    • physically disconnect the PC from the network by powering down the router.
    • Disable/turn off Zone alarm
    • Enable Windows firewall on your wireless connection
    • Start up the router and reconnect

Thanks for the support, I followed the steps, that you provided and would like to monitor the browsing for a few minutes to see if there is any improvement. Even reading posts on this bbs was a headache, because after clicking on next post, it takes so long to load or not load at all then crashes the computer. I will get back with you shortly, with results.

It still seems to be doing it when I go to a website such as www.careerbuilder.com, and does it randomly on other sites, including this one.

This browsing is very mysterious, because all my applications start fast. From Atlanta, GA, Network Magic detects my download speed at 9426kbps and upload at 336kbps approximately at 10:40 pm on 01/23/2007.

OK - so it doesn't look like your firewall is the problem. I'd recommend you turn Zonealarm back on now.

I've looked through the log and can't see anything obvious. You could use a tool to see if any programs you don't recognise, are trojans or the like (Prevx1 for example).

You appear to be running Pure Networks Network Magic. This isn't a program I'm familiar with, but looks to be handle a lot of the networking configuration. It might be worth looking at the Pure Network support forum to see if there are any issues like yours, reported there.

Another thing you could try is monitoring the task manager while you browse the internet, and see if a particular process starts using a lot of CPU cycles at the time when you connection slows. Then identify the program the process is associated. The easiest way of getting to task manager is to do a ctrl-alt-del once and choose Tack Manager from the screen that appears.

Can you please post the contents of the Event Viewer entry in full? It may well contain information that would help us help you.

Typing the message is fine. We don't need an image - just the contents of the error. I think we might be getting some where. However, it is likely to be the messages just before this one that has the most useful information as this article demonstrates.

Can you please post the contents of the event immediately above the one you posted, and the event immediately below. Can you also please clearly label which one was above the event and which one was below.

If there is a message about the Pure Networks software below each error message, I am confident the problem is with this software.

I think your next step is to get onto their support site:

The problem was present before installing Pure Networks, I was hoping Pure Networks would help solve the problem. Everything on this computer is fine except browsing. My downloads are fast, programs start fast, even my browsers start fast, but browsing to websites is slow. Is it some way to troubleshoot port 80?

You can use Ethereal to monitor the packets going in and out of your PC. Note that you do not connect to internet websites from port 80. You connect to port 80 on the website server from a port above 1024 on your PC.

I still think it is worth having a look around the Pure support pages.

Okay I downloaded Ethereal and during the installation I received a message that suggested I download airpac for wireless capture. I skipped the Airpac, but I did go ahead and run a capture with Ethereal, but I do not know what to look for.

Attached is a capture I have just made of a browser connection to http://www.google.co.uk. The key points are these.
    • There are only three IP addresses involved - My PC's, My DNS server's and the webserver, I've connected to. It's possible that there may be a couple of ip addresses responding to a request for a web page as some large sites have a dedicated server for handling image files and the like. But as you can see, google.co.uk is just using one.
    • The connection involves: first a call out to my DNS server to resolve the name www.google.co.uk; then a bit of back and forth to set up the TCP connection, and once the connection is set up, the HTTP request. Then a series of TCP communication with some extra HTTP calls. So only DNS, TCP, and HTTP protocols are seen.
    • The only packets that were captured were the ones shown. That is, I didn't have to cut this capture out of a lot of background network traffic. Between starting the capture and entering the URL into my browser, no packets were captured. Once the page was rendered, no further packets were seen.
    • The time column shows that most process took less than 0.05 sec. There isn't one process or connection that is hanging for a particularly long time.
    • There are no errors detected.
