No one I've talked to has ever heard of this feature and I'm wondering if it's just a quirk? You can drag and drop the files right off the lists to the desktop or open folders and drop them in or whatever. I haven't tried drag and drop onto the list but I'm sure it would work.

Dragging the shortcut into the quick launch created the icon I suppose. I'm fascinated with it because no one seems to know about it, although I'm sure that some do.

It's much quicker than regular ftp. 1 click and everything is on the desktop. I'm just very curious about it.

No, it's not a quirk, it's a feature. :) It's been a feature since the Win95 days. Well some 95 systems had it anyway. Those that had IE4 installed had this feature, those that didn't have it installed didn't have it. They didn't even have a quick launch bar. It was installed along with the installation of IE4.
Yes, that's how it got there. You can add any shortcut to the quick launch bar this way. If you get too many there, the small arrows you mentioned will appear. Click on it and the rest of the icons will pop up in a cascading menu just like you mentioned before. To get rid of any icons you don't want there, right click on the icon you don't want>delete.

You can even have a cascading menu of everything in My Computer on the taskbar. Just drag your My Computer icon to the taskbar. A button will appear that says My Computer on it. Click the little arrows by it and you can browse your entire computer via a cascading menu. Don't want it on your taskbar? Drag it to the top of the screen so your cursor is out of site and release the mouse button and it'll be at the top of the screen. Right click on it and you can set it to autohide and change several other things. You can put toolbars in this manner on any edge of the screen. Don't want the toolbar on any edge of your screen? You can also put any of them on your desktop too. Drag the My Computer icon to the top like I mentioned to create the toolbar. Then Click on the part of it that says My Computer and drag it down onto the Desktop. You'll have a cascading menu of My Computer on your desktop. To close any toolbar, including the My Computer one on your taskbar, right click on it>close toolbar.

Another way to add toolbars to the taskbar is to right click on the taskbar>toolbars and you'll see several predefined ones you can select. Otherwise, you can click new toolbar and browse to the folder, drive or whatever it is you want and select it that way. You can then move it to another edge of the screen or to the desktop from there (unlock the taskbar first). There's all kinds of possibilities with toolbars. I could go on and on about the things you can do with them but it would get to be a lonnnnnnnnnnnggggggg story. :) Experiment a bit and you'll be surprised at what you can do. Don't forget to use that right right mouse button on them to see what you can do with them. ;)

'Make sure that "Enable FTP folder view (outside of Internet Explorer" is checked.

Okay how exactly do you enable FTP folder view?
I've done it before, but can't remember where it is.

Found it checked in IE tools/ internet options, still don't get the option to view ftp in windows explorer

In IE click tools>internet options>advanced. You'll find it in the "browsing" section.

Want to thank you very much for the help, Zander. Several friends are very perplexed by this topic, as I was, so I put together a little Dick and Jane version for them at http://thurmania.com/FTPshortcut.html and it's helped greatly. Even got a dozen or so 'thank you Emails' so I want to pass it on..:D

This is really a terrific help site.!! The 'Print Scrn' trick I also learned here is delightful.

Well I'm glad I could help and it's nice to know other are benefiting from it too. Just one thing. I was going to check out your page but the link doesn't seem to work. I get a page not found error. I didn't know if you were aware of it or not so I thought I'd mention it. ;)

Oh Boy, that page:( I deleted it reeeeaaal quick. I had it really nice with screen shots and all.. Even found some more shortcuts... and then.....I started to move things around and managed to delete a whole lot of my files on my server. Do NOT repeat NOT put that FTP link in the Quick Launch!!

It really does open a line to the server and when you try to move a file from the quick launch it starts deleting files right and left....hi yi yi:eek: You can't move or delete anything from the quick launch without deleting the file from your server!

I finally had the presence of mind to close the quick launch and that saved what I had left. I'm sure glad I could notify my friends before they did it. I should have thought about how quick the response was over that link (almost instant) and maybe I'd have figured out it's always open.

    Oh well, I'm learning anyway.....

Oh my, I misunderstood I guess. I thought you were just clicking on a shortcut to open a window that would open with the site in it. From the sound of it, you got a cascading menu with everything on the site in your menu? I can see where that could be a problem.

If that's what happened, the answer is to either stretch the quick launch bar so that the shortcut shows without clicking on the arrows or else drag it from where it was to a location where it is visible. The latter would simply move one of those that is visible to where the FTP shortcut was. If you had it this way, it wouldn't cascade and clicking on it would open a normal window with the site just like you're used to.

    Perhaps I'm still misunderstanding. I don't know.
