Hi there, been reading a fair ammount of the forums and have been very impressed with the responces alot of people have recieved hopefully i'll be able to solve my problem also.

Genrally i've been quite good at fixing my own problems with PC's in the past after originally wanting to go into IT as a career, however this one has me totally confused, i even resorted to a complete rebuild of windows from scratch to try and nail the problem which leads me to think its hardware or i'm very unlucky and have had seperate errors.

I'll post the debuglog here shortly but will throw in some extra info, The error will only occur whilst i am installing a game using either my CD drive or my DVD drive, the blue screen error is the DRIVER_IRQL_blah blah error but hopefully that will make sence in the following debug log, i hope theres someone around who might be able to help, if not, it was worth a try :)

Thanks for anything anybody might be able to throw at it.

    Cheers

    Dezzy

Hi, Dezzy. Welcome to Windows BBS! :)

I'm sorry, I do not claim to be an expert with BSOD analysis. :( However, I try to help when I can.

I Googled HEAP_CORRUPTION and came up with relatively few results (and I even read some of them). One of the Google search results is even linked to a Windows BBS thread. Perhaps one of those links will help steer you in the right direction.

One of those Google results links to a Windows BBS thread that contains a suggestion to check RAM for errors. Here are links to a few RAM testers that have been suggested in these forums you might want to try.
While I don't claim to be an expert :( regarding BSOD dump analysis, according to this 4-page article, Network World: "How to solve Windows system crashes in minutes" (specifically the last paragraph of page 3 and all of page 4), it appears your BSOD problem might be caused by jscript.dll.

However, the version of jscript.dll you have appears to be the same as mine (located in C:\windows\system32\). The file date (Oct. 17, 2006) is the same as mine anyway.

Even if my help attempt is way off base, it provides something for you to think about while waiting for a response from someone more knowledgable. :)

BTW, I also noticed your Flash Player ActiveX Control (Flash6.ocx) is a version that reportedly has security vulnerability issues (I think). Secunia's "Software Inspector " is an online, Java based utility for examining your system for insecure versions of software you might want to also try while waiting for suggestions from others about your BSOD issue. I expect that utility will identify your current version of Flash Player as insecure. While this is probably not related to your BSOD issue, you might want to uninstall your current Flash Player, reboot, and install the latest version (version 9, I think) from www.adobe.com.

I looked more closely at my C:\windows\system32\jscript.dll file and noticed, even though the date is the same as yours appears to be, the time stamp is different.

Here are the properties for my jscript.dll file.
    • Location: C:\WINDOWS\system32
    • Size: 480 KB (491,520 bytes)
    • Size on disk: 480 KB (491,520 bytes)
    • Created: Monday, January 13, 2003, 2:57:58 PM
    • Modified: Tuesday, October 17, 2006, 12:00:00 PM
    • File version: 5.7.0.5730
    • Description: Microsoft (R) JScript
    • MD5 Hash: 194D61A029411CC83011181D6E818600
    • SHA-1 Hash: C9D5AB143BC9E2F2F655FC792F0F27114C6B4CB0
If you're running a different flavor of Windows XP than me, that might explain the time stamp difference.

I've had alot more random blue screens recently which is leading me to belive that the problem maybe hardware related, faulty memory block or something along those lines, its not something i've changed recently but perhaps could explain why these problems have continued even after the re-install of windows.

If anybody else has any other ideas before i give up and live with it untill i buy a new PC then i would appriciate that.

    thanks,

    Dezzy

I'm no expert when it comes to dump reports (but I'm trying to learn) - but it seems to be a problem with javascript in Internet Explorer that's causing this problem in your memory.

So, you test the memory to see if you get errors there. If that comes up clean, then you see if you can fix Internet Explorer. For IE7, try reverting back to IE6. For IE6, try reinstalling SP2 to repair IE6.

I've reverted to previous versions of IE already, but use firefox anyway, the Jscript is a comman thing that crops up in my dump reports, however i've also had some refering too "nv_mini.dll" and "nv4_disp.dll" I am aware that these are graphics card drivers and have reinstalled the gfx card and the drivers correctly, using safemode to remove all traces of the previous drivers however the problem still occurs.

This is what i meant in my last post when i suggested that the problem was random and could therefore be caused by faulty hardware.

I havent tried to use the SP2 install to repair, but i will try that next, i will also try and grab a new version of java to see if that corrects the problem.

Any other ideas are always welcome!

Javascript is different from Java (I don't fully understand the difference myself).

I would like to state, for the record, that's it's my opinion that there are no such things as "Random Events" with PC's. These "random events" are only non-random events whose cause/causes haven't been discovered yet.

That being said, hardware is a possibility. But it's easier to check the software than it is to check the hardware (in general) - so the troubleshooting usually starts there.

It's important to use a methodical approach to troubleshooting. Jumping around will just cause you to lose track of what you've already tried. Keep up with the software troubleshooting, then we can try some software tests for hardware troubleshooting, then we can start ripping your machine apart and swapping parts out (if it gets that far).

Good luck! This can be a real PITA!

Ok i ran a stress test on my memory earlier, Since reverting back to IE 6 i've not had any problems with JScript crashes, however, now this has only been whilst playing games (the same game before and after the install), i've had BSOD's and complete system halts with no responce.

The game if it has any relavance, is world of warcraft so its pushing my old system fairly hard. Every time i test something, i keep coming back to the one thing i cant test properly and thats my gfx card. I've had a couple of problems with the thing overheating in the past especially during the summer, i'm starting to wonder if its caused some major damage to the card, altho it still fuctions during basic tasks, when its pushed to display something heavy it gives me the lovely BSOD to stare at.

The test is to try another vid card and see if it blue screens on you - if it doesn't, then it's likely that the card is the issue.

All bets are off if you're overclocking anything - troubleshooting is best done with the system set at the standard settings. Once the troubleshooting is done in this mode, then add the overclocking tweaks one by one to test their stability.

    Hi, Dezzy.

If you keep getting BSODs and if they are different from each other, please post DebugWiz-generated dump logs for those as well. BSOD experts often ask for several BSOD dump logs because they apparently help the experts narrow down the cause (sometimes).

Also, since you mentioned possible heat issues, you might want try using some monitoring software to check your fan speeds, CPU temperatures, GPU temperatures, etc. One such monitoring utility that is often recommended on these forums is EVEREST v2.20 (Home/Free Edition). Here's a Major Geeks link to EVEREST Free Edition. The monitoring statistics of interest are located in EVEREST's Computer > Sensor section.

Other system monitoring utilities are available via this Major Geeks link.

If heat appears to be an issue with your CPU, graphics card, etc., then you probably should use a can of compressed air to clean your fans, CPU heat sink, etc. (while the computer is off). Then re-check your temperatures after cleaning.

When cleaning each of your fans, be sure to hold the fan blades with your finger so the fan does not rotate. That's a precaution to prevent potentially damaging electrical current from being produced by rotating the fan blades. Also, I recommend you do NOT separate your CPU heat sink from your CPU. Otherwise, you're in for some tedious work reseating the CPU heat sink to the CPU.

Thanks for that, hardware and cleaning computers has never been much of an issue for me, genrally tend to be very good at that. I havent actually had a BSOD to check since the last event, it seems to have crashed out before then.

    I'll report back soon!
