Just spent the last ~week trying to recover from a total system crash but, somewhere along the way, 'explorer' has lost its ability to remember windows size, position, & view settings (even the taskbar is effected, stuck in the config set before the problem occurred). I've had this problem before & managed to fix it (& also the same problem on a friend's machine) by running a prg which registers all DLLs & OCXs on the sys, but it didn't work this time! I've checked the registry, run SFC, & done everything else I can think of but I'm clueless. Everything else seems to be working fine, but this is very annoying, inconvenient, & frustrating. It's possible I'm overlooking something simple (not FolderOpts or BagMRU, tho), but I sure can't seem to figure it out - any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

I guess I should have mentioned that I'm running XPsp2 w/~all current updates. Strange that registering all DLLs & OCXs for (apparently) the exact same (folders & taskbar) problem has worked before (however, it may be relevant to note that this was before sp2, & my friend's machine was running ME). And you'd think that if a component was missing or corrupted it'd be replaced by SFC, so I'm totally perplexed . Any ideas? Anybody? (Definitely need some help on this one.)

SFC.EXE only replaces "protected" files - and there's a whole bunch that the OS needs that aren't protected. Should SFC.EXE not work, the next step is to either hunt down the bugger(s) individually - or to do a repair install of XP (which will save your data and programs while replacing the OS files). Here's a link about it: http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Is icon placement affected too? Is your problem that you can't change anything at all (it's all just stuck, period).

Or, can you change things, like window size and the change isn't remembered at all. In other words, if you change a window size and then close it, then open it again immediately, is it remembered?

If it does remember it, does it last until you reboot?

Also when you say, "recover from a total system crash ", what method did you use in this recovery? I'm thinking that if cutNpaste or copy is done on many things, they will retain a Read only attribute. This can cause problems.
