Getting a virtual memory too low warning indicator, in the systemtray of my win XP toshiba satellite notebook, my setting are set to automatic adjust memory as needed. And sometimes when I do a system restart, I get a No paging file or file is too small warning, anyone have an idea what could be wrong?

You may not have a paging file, or it may be too small. :)

Or, it could be that a program is hogging the virtual memory (unlikely at startup - but anything is possible).

Maybe a corrupt paging file? To fix this (and a too small paging file) go to Start...Run...and type in "sysdm.cpl" (without the quotes) and press Enter. Then click on the Advanced tab,
then on the Performance Settings button
then on the next Advanced tab
then on the Virtual Memory Change button

In this window, note the settings that your pagefile is set at (so you can restore it, if necessary, later on). Let us know what those settings are.

Then, click on "No paging file" then on "Set" then keep on clicking on OK to exit the dialog.

Reboot your system. Then run the steps above one more time. When you get to setting you pagefile, choose the "System managed size" and click on "Set" then click on OK repeatedly until you exit the dialog - then reboot to recreate the pagefile.

Or, you can set the min and max sizes for the pagefile to 1.5 times that amount of RAM that you have (if you don't want to let Windows manage it).

Depending on how your current settings compare with the new settings - this may solve your problem.

My settings are: System managed size
    Minimum allowed: 2MB
    Recommended: 2287MB
    Currently allocated: 256MB

If I recall correctly, most Toshiba laptops come with 512 mB of RAM installed - if it's functioning at 256 mB of virtual memory and you load a "hog" at startup you should see "issues ".

In that case I'd still advise zeroing out the page file (the first part of my last post) and then setting your pagefile to 1500 mB for both Min and Max sizes (that's the Custom setting I believe) - then click on Set, OK out of the dialogs and reboot to make the changes effective.
