I googled it and got a zillion hits but nothing seems to work. domain is geocities pro. Farthest I got was

    start>my computer> (in address bar) ftp://name:password at mydomain.com
...little flashlight looked all around but ... 'can't find it'.
tried folder view both ways, passive ftp both ways, no workee!

Worked great with ie6 what am I dong wrong? I don't need it, just want to know how to work it.

In the my computer address bar, just type the address of the site without the username - password. You should then be prompted for a username and password. This is the way it works for me. I could be remembering wrong but it seems to me they removed the ability to add the username and password to the address in order to access the site.

Here's a page that shows you several ways you can do this with IE7 installed.

Thank you Zander. Finally got it worked out from that site. Seems to be instant folder access with..:

    ftp://username:pword@ftp.domain.com

Why doesn't this work in a regular address bar? I think I don't understand the 'explorer' vice 'Windows' bit.

.....and why is that funny face there where I typed a colon and the 'p' in password?

Glad to hear you got it figured out. I guess I was wrong (not the first time in my life) about the password - username thing. It's been a while since I've looked at that page and I didn't remember seeing it there, probably because I never use that in the address bar. I was just trying to figure out how to get folder view in IE7 at the time. I've always just let it prompt me for username - password.

Why can't you do it in IE anymore? Well, I'm not sure but my guess is that it has to do with some security thing.

As for the smilie thing, the smilie is there because there's a colon and the letter p right next to each other in the address. That's the code on this board for that particular smilie. If they are put together it ends up looking like this. :p With a space between them they look like this. : p Without the space between them it shows up as a smilie.

When you post here you can click the preview button next to the submit button to see what your post is going to look like before you submit it. Seems to me I used to be able to work around that by wrapping the colon and p in bold tags or something like that but that doesn't seem to work anymore.

If you scroll down below the Submit Reply button, there are Miscellaneous Options. One of these is Disable smilies in text.

Ha! Guess I should pay more attention to what's all on that page. I've never noticed that there before. Now I've got egg on my face. :D Thanks Arie. I probably would have gone on for years wondering about that if you hadn't seen this post. And here I thought I knew it all. :D ;)

It does get curiouser and curiouser! The 'My Computer' addy bar above gets me into the folder to drag and drop files back and forth with ie7. The same addy in any other bar gets me a log-in screen which won't work no matter what.

With the FireFox browser, it's the same result with the 'My computer' bar but..... in any other addy bar with FF I get a single page with all my files which I can drag and drop FROM to my machine (split screen) but can not put any files into! HMMmmmm.

One last Q. With ie6 I could make a 'new shortcut' from desktop to get to the ftp folder. Is there a way to make a shortcut to give the result of typing the workable addy in the 'My Computer' bar? Meaning a single click to open the FTP folder like it use to? Does this make sense?

Create a new shortcut on your desktop to windows explorer by right clicking on the desktop>new>shortcut. In the box where it says location of the file either type the path to explorer.exe or browse to it and select it. Then, add a space after the path and then type the address of the ftp server. Here's an example of what I mean. This is the address to VCOM's public FTP server. Your's may have the enviromental variable %SystemRoot% or it may have just C:/Windows in it's place instead. Either one will work.
    Code:
    %SystemRoot%\explorer.exe ftp://198.92.146.20
I'm not sure about the username, password thing. You can experiment and see if it works or not. Just type whatever it is you type in the My Computer address bar to do this, into the properties of the shortcut.

That got me on the right track anyway. The only possible way for me are the instructions at the site you gave me..:

    1. Open IE7. Make sure that "Enable FTP folder view (outside of Internet Explorer" is checked

    2. In the address bar, type ftp://whateverftpsite.com. You'll see "IE cannot display the web page "

    3. Click Page Menu and select "Open FTP site in Windows Explorer ". You will then see the familiar "FTP Folder Error" in a Windows Explorer window. Click OK on the FTP Folder Error.

    4. Click File tabe and select "Login as "

    5. Type your User name and password and click on "Log on"

The popup using the same username/password does not work unless I do it just the above way. Have to hit the File tab and use that one!

    Many thanks for the help..:)

You're welcome. Sorry I couldn't come up with a better way. I rarely use IE for FTP so, though I know how to use it in a general way, it's still somewhat unfamiliar territory for me. Actually, I rarely use FTP but when I do, I use a FTP client for most of what I do. They are so much handier an there's so much more you can do with them vs the IE - Windows Explorer route. Still, Windows Explorer does just fine if you don't need the extras.

update on this fun thing!:) And it is just a fun thing as Geocities has a great uploader for my small purposes.

    first go-round:
    1. Made the shortcut you suggested using username:password
    2. Click the shortcut, cancel the popup
    3. click the 'page' button
    4. Click the 'open ftp site in windows explorer'
    5. Click 'file' and do the username/password and 'save'
    6. In the FTP folder

    following go-rounds
    1. Click the shortcut
    2. cancel popup and hit 'page'
    3. 'open ftp site in ...etc'
    4. The folder opens immediately..:)

Sounds a bit complicated but really is not. Just a matter of about 5 secs. Once the username/password is saved it stays there. Maybe not very secure but then who'd want to access 8000 pictures of my grandkids.??

    Thanks again...

    Chas.

Not to flog this subject but after playing with this all evening I've found some really neat things about it. If the shortcut is pointed to..:

FTP://name: password@domain.com (as the above) it's well and good but... when you do that a couple of times and then drag that shortcut down into the quick launch toolbar ..voila .. a little icon is created there to the first directory of my file mgr. and a single click opens the ftp folder to that directory. No more password popups.

On the left is the main directory (on top of your PC directories) you can click on for ALL the files and directories in the domain. SOOOO.... IE7's ftp service being so quick and easy (1 click), it might get a little more use by we novices.

I mention this because in all the googled forums I searched, everyone thinks it's a big pain to get to. Not so! One click and you're there.

More marvels yet!! That l'il icon is on a little sliding shelf down next to the clock. There's 2 little arrows there and I clicked them and my entire file mgr. at Yahoo is right there on my desktop. It's like the 'all programs' on the start button. I was amazed! As I went up the little arrows blossomed into more more and more and I can see all my files right there on my desktop.

That's amazing!! Don't have to go to the file mgr. at all. Hundreds of pictures and files right there to click on, on the desktop.:)

Even if one doesn't use or like the IE7 FTP, that is an amazing, handy trick to use, if only to check on some file without leaving the desktop. This IE7 is going to be great fun pokin' around on to see what else it will do differently from 6. Though I never thought to try that with 6. Maybe it would do it too?

It is strange how different IE7 works on different systems:

I can not include the user name and password in the URL. That function was removed on IE6 with XP SP2 installation. Updating to IE7 makes no difference.

No matter what I do, in IE7, a FTP site is always displayed as a HTML page. A login popup will appear to enter login details.

Opening the URL in Windows Explorer (via IE7 or directly) will bring up the login popup but once typed in, a box can be checked to remember the details. Automatic login thereafter.

I'm running version 2002 on a gateway 450 laptop. works both ways for me. I just made a shortcut to ftp.domain.com and it works the same way. The popups will not save anything for me. I have to go to the 'file' login for it to work. You do get your domain files on your desktop though?

It seems like checking the box to remember the details in WE "spills over" on IE7. When I went back and opened the URL in IE7, I was logged in automatically.

No, I haven't created a shortcut to the FTP site because I don't want it. When I visit the FTP site, it is to copy folders and/or files to and from my computer. I never just browse pictures or anything else which makes Windows Explorer the logical place for my usage.

If you want me to, I can create the shortcut, just to test!
