Hello: I did do a search on this & related forums & found that the answer to "The W2k3 server's IP address needs to be set as the XP PC primary DNS server ", did not work. This is a w2KAS which I install as a learning tool & to be a simple home file server. It looks like the network remains p2p, however, because when I go to "system properties" on a client wXPproSP2 PC and hit the "change" button to join the domain, I get the message (in part): "multiple connections to a server...by same user, using more than one user name, are not allowed. Disconnect all previous connections...& try again." Disabling the network card & trying to connect didn't help either (duh). So I don't know how to disconnect from the p2p (if that is the connection).
Advice & pointers to good howtos also appreciated, thanks.

    Hi,

This problem happened to me before. Try to log on PC locally and join to ur domain again. It may work because this was how I fixed the problem.

Thanks for reply, ise2006. However, I haven't had to logon locally. How do you do that outside of safe mode? Do you change account type, do you create a new non-admin account, do you change something in "log on locally" properties in the admin tools? Or - ??? Thanks.

Are you logged on to a PC elsewhere on the network, with the account you are trying to use to authorise the connection of a new PC? Default behaviour of 2003 server is to only allow a user to log on at one PC at a time.

I'd recommend that you create a domain admin account that you set aside purely for managing the network. Then use that account for jobs like adding new PC to the network.

There is a setting in either AD or Group Policy that allows a user account to log on at more than one computer at a time. It depends whether you find this facility useful (it can prevent being lazy and using the same account all over the place).
