Hi guys, I've just burnt a couple of DVDs - one with Nero 6 and the other with Magix Movie Edit Pro 11. When I later load these disks into my drive the file manager just opens and shows me the file names on the disk. The same happens when I load a commercial DVD.

I've gone to My Computer/devices/properties/actions and set video files to "autoplay ", clicked "apply" and exited.

Then as soon as I insert a DVD, it still just opens the folder to show me the files. Going back into my computer/properties, the action has defaulted back to "prompt me each time to choose an action" and there is no check mark next to "autoplay ".

Please can someone help me sort this out? I am unable to check whether my disks are playing correctly.

    Thanks in advance,
    C

Hi Charles, thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately the .exe hasn't fixed the problem. I've rebooted and disks still won't autoplay and the properties/actions still defaults back to "open folder ".

When I insert a DVD I get the "Actions" box. One of the actions is to open the folder with Explorer and there is an "always perform this action" checkbox. I would say that your system has been set to always open the DVD's folder with Explorer.

    The solution should be here:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320036/en-us
(I would expect...I never check that checkbox :D)

Thanks for replying, Mattman. Unfortunately that page didn't help me either.

When I insert a DVD, I get a directory that pops up and displays two folders:

Audio_TS and video_TS. The audio folder is empty and the video folder consists of six items with the suffixes .vub, .ifo and .bup.

This is what my settings are:

Think I found what you need.

Go to My Computer, right-click on the drive/s (DVD drive), select Properties, go to the Autoplay tab. There you should see the "actions ", select Video Files in the drop-down box and you should be able to change it to "prompt me to choose an action each time" or set it to "take no action ". Click Apply.

Thanks for the latest suggestion Matt. This is what happens now:

If I insert a pre-recorded commercial DVD I get the same file box with individual files. If I insert a dvd I've just recorded on Nero, I get this message:

Windows Media Player cannot play the DVD because a compatible DVD decoder is not installed on your computer.

    What does this mean?

I know the disks work because I've run them on my DVD player.

    That sounds promising.

WMP does not have the right decoder (codec) to run the video. You can try updating the codecs in WMP. In WMP go to the Help menu and run "Check for updates... "

Has Nero installed a video media player? (I don't have a recent version of Nero.)

I use Power DVD, which comes bundled with graphics cards.

    Try Xvid:

Do a Google Search for DVD player and you will see some of the different players, but apart from if they come bundled with hardware, etc, you will need to buy them.

Thanks Mattman - I've installed Nvidia, which has got it working. Who'd have thought a DVD player couldn't play DVDs without extra software? (well, obviously most people, but not me)

That's good :) I learnt something as well, how to reset Autoplay

    Matt
PS I saw a suggestion for another free video player today and was going to suggest it...although you won't be needing it now. It is "Media Player Classic ". I might try it if I find problems with players.
