Until I re-formatted my hard drive & re-installed WinXP, SP2, my PC booted directly into Windows. But now I get an irritating Log In box ( I do not have a password set) that appears before Windows will continue loading. I am an only user & do not need this step. Can I disable it ?

    AndynKrisN,
    welcome to Windows BBS ... :) ... !

Did you by chance install .NET Framework 1.1? If so, that's the reason. Go to Windows Update and install the critical ones for .NET Framework. That will cure the problem.

    Christer

    Edited:

By "install the critical ones for .NET Framework" I refer to the high priority updates for .NET Framework 1.1, not the recommended updates .NET Framework 2.0 or 3.0.

.NET frameworks do not work like Service Packs. They are not cumulative. Please do not remove Framework 1.1 because 2.0 and 3.0 are available.

The .NET Framework update adds a new user called aspnet_wp account. The aspnet account/user can only be deleted, not disabled. Information on what the user account would be needed for:

When you run an ASP.Net application on a WebServer, not necessarily on your local machine, that is the account the Web Server uses for credentials/permissions. ASP.NET is a programming framework built on the common language runtime that can be used on a server to build powerful Web applications. ASP.NET offers several important advantages over previous Web development models: More information here: http://docs.aspng.com/quickstart/aspplus/doc/whatisaspx.aspx

The ASP.NET worker process (Aspnet_wp.exe) should run with a different and less privileged identity than the Windows default System identity. This allows the process to run as a relatively un-trusted user so that hosted Web applications do not have administrative privileges and cannot compromise the integrity of the server. More information here: http://tinyurl.com/aedb

    To enable autolgon again:
Delete the user account aspnet_wp using Control Panel, User Accounts.

Once the account is deleted, apply these settings:

    1. Go to Start/Run and type in: control userpasswords2 and press ok.

    2. On the Users tab, clear the Users Must Enter A User Name And Password To Use This Computer check box and then click OK.

    3. In the Automatically Log On dialog box that appears, type the user name and password for the account you want to be auto-logged on each time you start your computer.

    AndynKrisN,
you have received two suggestions for a fix to your situation.

My suggestion is working only if it actually is .NET Framework 1.1 that has been installed (please confirm, yes or no) and the update that you want is SP1 for .NET Framework 1.1.

See The Welcome to Windows screen appears when you start Windows XP after you install the .NET Framework 1.1

The more recent versions of .NET Framework, 2.0 and 3.0 do not substitute 1.1 and do not provide a fix for the situation.

Bills suggestion was the only one for this situation until SP1 for .NET Framework 1.1 was released. The beauty of that fix is that it is universal for all similar situations when an automatic login on a specific account is desired.

    Excellent Help... THANK you

While I did not have that username as a user account, I nevertheless followed the reinstall auto logon directions that you so clearly described and... ALL IS WELL ! I must have pulled out half of my hair over the last month, trying to fix this. You two guys are GREAT.

Good news and thanks for the compliment ... :) ... !

You did not confirm if .NET Framework 1.1 is or is not installed. If it is, you should go get it updated anyway. SP1 is a security update and so are the other one(s)!

    Hi All,

Sorry to resurrect this thread but I have been having the same log-in problem as AndrynKrisN, ie having to click on the user name to get into windows.
XP Home SP2, fully up to date, including the .net whatsits. I followed exactly the instructions given by Bill to cure this problem, then disaster!! At the next boot I got the message "The system could not log you on . . etc ", clicked OK, typed in the necessary password, which did not work. The only option offered was to shutdown.
Fortunately I was saved, again, by True Image re-installing the 'C' partition, and putting things back to normal.

I'll stick with clicking the user name from now on!

    Hi Roger!

I understand it as you have version 1.1 installed. Has it been updated at Windows Update with these two updates:

    NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe
    NDP1.1sp1-KB886903-X86.exe

After installing those two, the login requirement disappeard on a computer that I worked on.

    Hi Christer,
Thanks for the rapid response. I re-downloaded the two updates listed. I was told by the installer that KB867460 was already installed, but running KB886903 failed to install with the following Log:

    [KB886903.log]

    It doesn't help me much!!
Clicking my user name is no real problem, just a little annoyance which I shall put up with until my Vista arrives.
UPDATE: I tried re-installing the Net 1.1 to see if the missing SP1 Key would be installed, but it wasn't, got the same result for 886903!

    Roger,
I am a Ghost user which makes me a lousy trouble shooter. Instead of trying to find the cause of the problem and a possible fix, I just go get my Ghost Boot Disks. In your capacity as a True Image user, you know what I'm talking about.

My guess is that the installer searched the registry for evidence of a prior update but didn't find it. List of bugs that are fixed in the .NET Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 (SP1) labels NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe as Service Pack 1 which makes it a clear suspect of being the prerequisite for NDP1.1sp1-KB886903-X86.exe.

For some reason, NDP1.1sp1-KB867460-X86.exe did not register properly when installed.

Is it entered in Add/Remove? If so, remove it and download both updates locally and install in sequence, KB867460 > KB886903. If not, uninstall .NET Framework 1.1 and take it from square one.

Your only an image away from restoring if things get messed up ... ... !

    Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0

Sorry I neglected to inform you of whether .Net Framework 1.1 is installed.
I checked Control Panel/Add or Remove Programs and see that Microsoft .Net Framework 2.0 is listed. No others. Since everything is working ideally now, I subscribe to the old adage : " If it ain't broke, don't fix it " LOL . Therefore, I am hesitant to install version 3.0 . And since you said that the updates do NOT overwrite the older version, but merely add on to it, should version 1.1 show up in the list ? It does not appear.
Do you recommend that I download and install .Net Framework 1.1 first and then 3.0 or ( hopefully) just leave well enough alone ?
Thanks again & sorry for being a pest.

    Addendum to post above

Checking the History list on Windows Update page, I find that the following two were installed on December 9, 2006:

    1. Security update for Microsoft .Net Framework version 2.0 KB917283
    2. " " KB922770

    AndynKrisN,
since .NET Framework 1.1 is not installed, it was not the cause for the login issue.

I doubt that .NET Framework 2.0 is the culprit (never heard of it, never experienced it). The different versions of .NET Framework are "stand alone" in that neither requires any of the others. Unless you plan on installing anything that needs 1.1 or 3.0 leave them out of the box.

However, in a PM exchange, Bill pointed out to me that a programmer may have used more than one version when creating his software. This would mean that all used versions must be installed. You will be notified if the needed version(s) is/are not installed.

    @r.leal,

You mis-typed or used the wrong password.
It is not value checked in control userpassword2, so an invalid password would lead to your result.

Remember that you can in this situation:
Reboot and begin tapping the F8 function key; the Advanced Boot Options menu will appear. Choose Safe Mode. You will receive a username and password prompt. Logon. Repeat the control userpassword2 step, first enabling the checkbox at the top: users must enter a username and password to use this computer.

Then repeat again unchecking the box, and when prompted, indicate the username and password for autologon.

You do not have to re-image if you make a mistake.

Sorry Bill, but I did not mis-type my password, it's the same one I've been using for six years now. I also went through the re-boot procedure three times before I gave up.

    Thanks anyway,

Under XP Home you cannot try to password enable 'Administrator'. Select either Owner, or if you have created a secondary Administrator priviliged user account, the username specificly.

While you are the default Administrator, you paradoxicly under XP Home are not 'Administrator', but rather 'Owner'. This is not true under XP Pro where you would by default be 'Administrator' and the 'Owner' account is identical to the 'Administrator' account.

For controll userpassword2 to fail to enable autologon, would require a failure of the LSASS security process, and/or serious problems in the SAM security hive.

Which suggests two possible other reasons for the failure:
    . the password entered was incorrect;
. or, the account chosen was incorrect

Please see if you were by chance attempting to autologon the 'Administrator', as you are not that user under XP Home, and a valid logon for 'Administrator' under XP Home is only possible in Safe Mode.
