Due to seeming unsolvable problems with IE7 dieing as soon as I try to access Microsoft Update, I would like to know if there is some way Firefox can be made to access that service. I've been told that I need an ActiveX plugin for FF but the only one I've found works only with FF1.5.

    Any suggestions?

You should install the IE Tab extention . It uses the IE engine, and the switch is done by simply clicking on the icon, which I have on the menu (top) bar. When you are done you don't have to do anything, after changing to another site, as the Firefox engine is default. This way you get the benefits of the dual engine of Netscape8.x, with a program which works.
The IE Tab extention has been well maintained, and it works with all Firefox and Seamonkey versions.

I think the IE Tab, which I also use, uses the IE that is installed on the computer. So if he is having trouble with the installed IE accessing Windows Update, he will probably have the same problem using IE Tab, in my opinion. But it is worth a try!

Well, Microsoft is making things harder every day, in the alleged interest of security. When I switch to the IE engine I am getting this:

To use this site, you must be running Microsoft Internet Explorer 5 or later.

To upgrade to the latest version of the browser, go to the Internet Explorer Downloads website.

If you prefer to use a different web browser, you can obtain updates from the Microsoft Download Center or you can stay up to date with the latest critical and security updates by using Automatic Updates. To turn on Automatic Updates:

    1. Click Start, and then click Control Panel.
    2. Depending on which Control Panel view you use, Classic or Category, do one of the following:
    * Click System, and then click the Automatic Updates tab.
    * Click Performance and Maintenance, click System, and then click the Automatic Updates tab.
    3. Click the option that you want. Make sure Automatic Updates is not turned off.

I don't want to use Automatic Updates. I just want to informed that updates are available. However, IE7 gets me into Updates. So, I copied the link into FF with IE Tab turned on , and I got Windows updates.

IE Tab causes FF to die

I installed IE Tab but as soon as I tried to activate it, it caused FF to die.

I have been using automatic update but I like to check manually from time to time as well.

I had some issues with IETab v.1.x, but never had any problem after that. I use the update exactly like you do, but for a different reason. I had been informed that updates were available, and, invariably, they don't get anywhere from the systray. Strangely, the latest updates did work, so approaching them from FF2.0 with IETab showed that there was nothing there.
I have no idea why FF would die after activativing IE Tab.

I would not expect it to run in IE, as it seems to have been created for other browsers. In any event, I have never had a need for anything but IETab

    ?????

All I was doing is just addressing rbtyod's issue. You may not expect it to run in IE but some others might.

He wants to get the updates. This is a way to get them.

After getting them this way, one of them may just fix his IE7 issue and allow WinUpdates direct from Microsoft normally.

    windizupdate seems to work! Thanks!

mflynn, thanks for telling me about windizupdate. I installed it without a problem and it does seem to work. Thanks. :) Unfortunately, there was no magic IE7 fix available to fix my IE problem. :(
