Desktop PC running XP Pro prompts the "New HDWE found" message at every bootup but there is in fact no new hdwe.

It claims it sees a printer. Well the Epson printer that was connected is now gone. I have uninstalled all related programs/drivers successfully, as was prompted. Deleted old folders that still had EPSON in their title. Performed a registry cleanup...2000+ problems found and fixed. I have individually, one at a time, dis-abled the USB host controllers and rebooted. Still get the prompt.

CLICKing on < Cancel > does stop the process and I can from that point use the PC seemingly without any problem. But...I am a bit anal retentive when it comes to power usage and always shutdown the system after every use.

MY ISP provides NAV as part of my service and it hasn't found anything on manual scans. I run SpyWare Terminator, AdWare and SpyBot programs regularly. They normally only find low threat level cookie problems and never anything major to date.

Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Any additional info will be offered on request.

    Thanks in advance!

    Don't cancel.
Let the process continue and see what Windows finds as "new hardware.
You could have a MB component that has gone bad or a hardware that is itself a bit flaky and does not get detected fully at boot. I've run into this situation w/ a wifi adapter where at some boots it "does not exist" and on others it was fine.

    Thanks...but,

    Tony,

Thanks but like I wrote, the PC is looking for a printer and there is no physical connection either by USB or Parallel port to it. It thinks there is but there isn't...and won't be anytime soon as long as they continue to charge outrageous prices for ink replacement or even refills.

That last remark reflects my aforementioned 'cheapness gene'.
