burned out two harddrive?

    i have a p4 2.8 about 4 yrs old
    asus p4p8x se motherboard.i just got an 80 gig drive and new power supply , put the new power supply in everthing works fine, put the new west/digital 80 gig drive in runs for 5 minutes and burns up.bring it back to the store try another , five minutes and burns up again smoke coming right out of the thing,but the master drive ok.Anybody got any ideas what might be going on.

    Sounds like an overvoltage problem at the connector from the power supply you hooked to the drive. Test it.

    How would you go about testing it and what should the voltage be.
    also it is just jumped off the power plug i have the master plugged into.

    How is it jumped? Are you using a splitter or did you splice another 4-pin molex connector in? It sounds like the connector is reversed. The +5V red wire is supposed to be next to the IDE cable.

    I just used the power that was there , i did not jump it my self.
    The power supply was bought at the same time as the drive .

    In other words it isn't jumped. You just used the second 4-pin connector on the same power leg going to the master drive from the power supply. Did you make sure the red wire was facing the IDE cable?

    You are right one of the power leads coming out of the powersupply has the red wire on the other side.Good thing i did not plug my master in with it when i changed the p/s . Will be bring it back to the store and ask for new one and check it before going home.
