I had the power go out in my house and on rebooting I have several strange things going on under the hood:

    1. I have a partial copy of my internet home page over top of the desktop that I can not get rid of. It takes up the right most 60% of the display and has sliders and I can even choose options from the screen and the images change to reflect the selection. however I can't close it and the windows task manager shows no programs running.

    2. I also have my internet copy (installed about a week ago) coming up with no add ons selected and I have no success in trying to get them opened up. This too is new since the power issue.

I went into safe mode and tried to cahnge display settings with success on rebooting.

    Addendum:
I find that if I change my home page the desktop problem area changes to the new home page when back on the desktop. And nowe I have addons present (like google)

Would appreciate any help anyone can offer.

I should mention that otherwise applications come up and seem to function ok.

Hi, The last part of your post gives a clue. Fisrt I think the power going off and the strange pop ups are only a coincidence. Have you treid running a spyware remover? And what version of IE are you using?

For your first problem, right click on the desktop, choose properties>desktop tab and then click the customize desktop button. Then, click on the web tab and uncheck anything you see in the box where it says web pages. Hopefully your homepage will be listed there and that will get rid of it.

For the second problem, check the properties of the shortcut you use to start IE (right click on it, properties). Where it says target, see if it has -extoff at the end of the path statement. If so, remove the -extoff part.

    thank you!

The web home page option was indeed checked- how and why I don't know, but unchecking fixed it.

There was no extension to the path and it seems fine now- thanks again to you both and to everyone for all the help you give all the time!
