I have an old laptop on which, I am wondering, could I successfully run Windows XP Home Edition. Namely, a Compaq Prosignia 165, Pentium II, 400 MHz. processor with 192 MB of RAM on board.

Current OS is Win 98SE, which shipped with the laptop as the original OS. The
main reason I'd like to run XP, if possible, is better coordination with my XP
Desktop, also reliable connection to my broadband internet service which Win
98SE seems not able to support (for some mysterious reason I've never been able to resolve).

Note that I only use this laptop as a dedicated word processor running MS Word 2000 and occasionally, Internet access. Thus I can't see buying a new laptop for these two simple, but for me essential, tasks. Plus I like the bright screen and, especially, the keyboard.

Sooo--does anyone on this service have any experience or expert opinion as to whether XP is doable on an antique like this Prosignia? Doesn't have to run
particularly fast, altho I'd like it to be faster than molasses in winter, as
    folks in Main say.

Any help from you folks would be much appreciated. Thanks very much for your time and attention.

    Hello tvjohns,

The minimum specs needed for XP:
    http://www.helpwithwindows.com/WindowsXP/setup01.html

That part should be ok as long as you're not looking for "fast ".

Its the drivers that may be the show stopper.

On that same page a little further down is the Update Advisor - run that and see what it comes with.

    Regards - Charles

FWIW, I don't think you'd be happy even if you're hardware is supported. I fear it would be hopelessly slow. Don't think you'd be happy.
