    Got a question here...

I run a website, but I've never shared my computer. Well, now I am with my brother.

I want to protect my files in case he messes with all my generic image/webpage template files.

I'm wondering how to put a password on a folder. I know you can buy a program, but I'm not really up for that

I know you can right click the folder and then Properties. The sharing tab has an option "Make this folder private ". However, when I do that, it says that I need to make a password for this username

Well, I'm hesitant to do that. I'm not sure what it means. Does that mean everytime Windows starts up and you have the option to choose an account - does it mean put the password there? Like, will it create the username password on my whole account

    Any help is appreciated!

As the message says, even if you make it private if your user account doesn't require a password to logon, anybody can logon to your user account and access the folder.

Have you considered just setting up a second user account for your brother? That way you can password your user account and he won't be able to logon your account which means he won't be able to access any of your data files.

Hey I was looking for something like that here are a few free ones I found if you dont want to set up another user account.

AxCrypt - An excellent free encryption utility that enables users to encrypt all files within a folder and not allow those files to be viewed unless a passphrase (password) is known.
WinCry - A freeware utility that enables your files to be encrypted, secure deletion, as well as other helpful methods of protecting your files.
Folder Guard - A commercial version of a password protection software that enables you to password protect files, folders, and other Windows resources.

-Or go to http://www.computerhope.com/issues/ch000705.htm#other and have a read.

    Hope this helps out

if you right click you can create new zipped folder, zipped folders can be passworded by clicking file/add password and yes if you just want to make folder private you will have to make your screen name passworded in user accounts. also you can right click the folder propeties and make folder hidden
when u want to see the folder just open any folder then go to folder options and check show hidden files and folders, remember to un-check when finished. you could always bury the folder somewhere in windows like i do
    9hidden of course)
