I got a trojan please help!!! Annoying

I got a trojan in my system and cant get it out. I noticed CD82 had it a few days ago. I get that winjews16.exe in my processes. I just dont know where to start to rid of this annoyance.

The file you mention is indeed a baddie and fairly new too. But we can get it.

We first need to get a HijackThis! log file so we can see what else is installed on your system.

Please download HijackThis! SetUp from here. Save the file to your desktop.

Double-click the HijackThis! SetUp icon to begin the installation. Follow the prompts for the default install location of:'C:\Program Files\HijackThis'. Tick the 'Create a desktop' button when the option appears. Select next, then allow HijackThis! to start.

Then press the [Scan] button. You will notice the [Scan] button will turn into a [Save Log] button. Click the [Save Log] button and notepad will open up with the contents of the scan. Right-click in the saved log, and select 'copy'. Then proceed to your original thread, unless otherwise instructed and click the '[Reply]' button and paste the saved contents to be reviewed. Do not make any modifications to the log or perform any 'fixes' until told to do so.

Once we have seen the log file, we'll proceed with removal.

OK, lets get to some cleaning.


Please hit the 'Ctrl' key + 'Alt' key + 'Delete' key to bring up the Task Manager and select the 'Processes' tab. Then find, high-light and select 'End Task' on the following process(es) if present:
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winjews16.exe

Download the Killbox from here and save it to the desktop.

• Double-click the KillBox icon on your desktop to open it
• Select "Delete on Reboot "
• Then select "All files ".

Copy the file names below to the clipboard by highlighting them and pressing Control-C:
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\iifgfef.dll
C:\WINDOWS\system32\winjews16.exe

Return to Killbox

• Go to the File menu, and choose "Paste from Clipboard ".
• Click the red-and-white [Delete File] button.
• Click "Yes" at the Delete on Reboot prompt. Click "No" at the 'Pending Operations' prompt.

Do not allow KillBox to reboot the system.

Open Hijackthis, select the [Do a system scan only] button and look over the following entries I have listed, check the boxes [] next to them and press the [Fix Checked] button. When you are doing this, make sure you have No IE windows, nor any other browsers open, including this one. Reboot if I have specified below, and post a fresh HijackThis log.

It looks as tho one is being persistent.

Can you please manually check to see it is still on the system? If so, lets download a tool to try and 'unhook' it.

Download Unlocker.
Follow the prompts for install.
Once installed:

• Locate the file
• Right-click it and select 'Unlocker'
• In the window that appears, it will show all processes which it is 'hooked' into select 'Unlock All'
• In the drop down menu to the left select 'delete'.
• Close Unlocker, reboot and run HJT again to see if it is present..

 

Having some trouble with that

I can't see winjews16.exe on there but I found iifgfef.dll in there.

I can't get past the step of clicking unlock all because it restarts my system. The programs it is 'hooked' to are winlogon.exe, explorer.exe and iexplore.exe

 

Try going into safe mode to delete it using Unlocker. I should have offered that option in the same post. I've had to do that many times myself.

 

Nope still no good

Even in safe mode my system restarts its. If I tell it to not auto-restart on a system failure it just shuts down.

 

Ok, time to use the big gun.

This can be very dangerous, be sure you select the proper file to delete.

Save the file to your desktop and extract the contents to your 'Windows' folder.

Double-click the GMER icon to open it.
Once opened, click the '>>> ' tab to expand all tabs.
Then select the 'Processes' tab.
Then hit the [Kill All] button and answer 'Yes' to the prompt. This will kill all processes. Your desktop will lose all its icons, this is normal.
Then hit the [Files..] button.
When the Files.. window appears, navigate to the proper file in system32 folder, highlight it and hit the [Delete] button.
Now hit the [Restart] button and answer 'yes' to restart the system.

Run another HJT log to see if that file is present.

 

All done but its still there. I can't actually see it in the folder when I access it manually. When I used GMER it would not restart via the command so I had to hit the button on the tower. Dunno if that makes a difference.

Sorry I read that wrong didn't I. The .dll is gone but obviously something is looking for it. Will this matter. I havent had an virus alert yet. I will see if it trys to connect to the net when I turn off the modem. BBS

Actually no, those files are actually there, but due to a bug within HJT, they sometimes report as 'missing'.

Your HJT log appears clear of malware indications, how is the machine running now? Let me know.

Our recommendations for secure surfing an some minor clean up follows.

We have 3 more things to do, mostly maintenance and then our recommendations:

Empty the TIF (Temporary Internet Files)
Delete all the files in (and any subfolders of) the C:\Windows\Temp folder
The app below will help with temp files.
Index.dat Suite

Also, delete all your cookies, and empty your recycle bin. But remember, by deleting your cookies, you will have to re-enter any passwords and log-in info for any sites you are usually required to do so with.

This would also be a good time to set a new system restore point for your machine.
Set New System Restore Point. Do not do this unless there are no other user accounts to be diagnosed.

Also, as you are an XP user, if there are any other accounts on this machine, they too, must be cleaned with AdAware, Spybot S&D, then HJT. Not all infections are global, nor are all the HJT fixes global. You can post each user account here into this thread, but please, do only one at a time to avoid confusion. It is very rare that anything significant is ever found.

To further prevent the installation of ad/mal/spyware, DL the apps below, which are just as good the fight against ad/mal/spyware as AdAware & Spybot S&D:

SpywareBlaster
With SpywareBlaster v3.5.1 , just DL, install and check for updates, enable Internet Explorer protection, and your done! I don't recommend using IE restricted sites protection as it's not a very large database. Use IE-SPYADs below.

To avoid known malware infested sites from loading in IE install IESPY ADS.
And MVPS Hosts File will accomplish a similar tactic and provide another layer of protection.

And to prevent unknown applications from being inserted to start up on your machine install WinPatrol v10.0.5.

Another thing I would suggest, is to install SiteAdvisor. It gives sites a few different 'ratings' and while not fool proof, a good additional layer of information about many sites.
