Let me start out by saying thanks for the terrific service you provide here. we would be in deep Sh.. without your help.

    Thanks. :)

And here is my problem :^)

So I'm trying to getthis machine cleaned up for my brother.
It had alot of problems at first. I've cleaned it up as best I can using TrendMicro online scan, ADDAware, and Spybot.

The Trend micro has expired so it is not worth much.

But IE will close without provocation and Adobe Acrobat Reader opens for no good reason.

I think somrthing is still going on.

    Please take a look.

    Here is my HJT log:

Hello and welcome to WindowsBBS Forums.

I'm not seeing anything out of the ordinary on the system.

I'd remove Wild Tangent as it's not needed to run anything on the PC. It comes bundled with AOL AIM.

Lets get a couple more scans, and uninstall and re-install the Adobe software. If you had some malware it could have corrupted it.

    Kaspersky Online Scanner

Click on Kaspersky Online Scanner icon.
Accept the Kaspersky agreement and the program will load.
You will then be prompted to install an ActiveX component from Kaspersky, click Yes

The program will then begin downloading the latest definition files. This will take a good while, even with hi-speed Internet access.
Once the files have been downloaded click on Next

Now click on [Scan Settings] button.
In the scan settings make sure that the following are selected:
    • Scan using the following Anti-Virus database:
    • Extended (if available otherwise Standard)
    • Scan Options:
      Scan Archives
      Scan Mail Bases
    Click OK

Now under the Please select a target to scan:
    Select My Computer

The program will begin the scanning process.
The scan will take a while so be patient and let it run.
Once the scan is complete it will display if your system has been infected.
Then click on the [Save as Text] button
Save the file to your desktop.

Copy and paste that information in your next post for me to review.

**Note:please edit out any references to 'cookies', 'Recyler folder' and 'System Volume Information Folder' from all logs

    Then:

Download AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 formerly Ewido Anti-Spyware from HERE and save that file to your desktop.
This is a 30 day trial of the program
    • Once you have downloaded ewido anti-spyware, locate the icon on the desktop and double-click it to launch the set up program.
    • Once the setup is complete you will need run ewido and update the definition files.
    • On the main screen select the icon "Update" then select the "Update now" link.
    • Next select the [Start Update] button, the update will start and a progress bar will show the updates being installed.
    • Once the update has completed select the "Scanner" icon at the top of the screen, then select the "Settings" tab.
    • Once in the Settings screen click on "Recommended actions" and then select "Quarantine ".
    • Under "Reports "
    • Select "Automatically generate report after every scan "
    • Un-Select "Only if threats were found "
Close ewido anti-spyware, Do Not run a scan just yet, we will shortly.

Reboot, into safe mode, this way:
    • Turn on the computer
    • Immediately begin tapping the <F8> key.
    • Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the <Enter> key.
IMPORTANT: Do not open any other windows or programs while ewido is scanning, it may interfere with the scanning process.

Launch ewido-anti-spyware by double-clicking the icon on your desktop.
    • Select the "Scanner" icon at the top and then the "Scan" tab then click on "Complete System Scan ".
    • ewido will now begin the scanning process, be patient this may take a little time.
Once the scan is complete do the following:
    • If you have any infections you will prompted, then select "Apply all actions "
    • Next select the "Reports" icon at the top.
    • Select the [Save report as[ button in the lower left hand of the screen and save it to a text file on your system (make sure to remember where you saved that file, this is important).
    • Close ewido and reboot your system back into Normal Mode and post the results of the ewido report scan.(Please edit out any cookie, Recyler and System Volume Information Folder references)

We'll have a peek and see what if anything is found.

Ok, so I'll guess one of the problems was SpywareSheriff? Did you run SmithFraudFix on the system? You may want to, just in case. At the very least, run option one to see if anything is remaining.

We should also clean out all temps too.

    Download Atribunes ATF Cleaner
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Tick the following boxes:
      • Windows Temp
      • Current User Temp
      • All User Temp
      • Cookies<<<---By deleting your cookies, you will have to re-enter any passwords and log-in info for any sites you are usually required to do so with.
      • Temporary Internet Files
      • History
      • Prefetch
      • Java Cache
    • Click the [Empty Selected] button.

Please download SmitfraudFix (by S!Ri). Save it to your desktop.

Double-click the Smithfraud.exe and it will install a new folder to your desktop, called SmithFraudFix. Shortly after that a dos command window will appear. Once it opens, hit any key to continue.
Select option #1 - Search by typing 1 and press "Enter "; a text file will appear, which lists infected files (if present).
Please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

Note : process.exe is detected by some antivirus programs (AntiVir, Dr.Web, Kaspersky) as a "RiskTool "; it is not a virus, but a program used to stop system processes. Antivirus programs cannot distinguish between "good" and "malicious" use of such programs, therefore you may get an alert.

No need for a new HJT log, just the results from the SmithFraud tool.

It's one of those infection apps, you DL it and ya get infected. And it's entirely likely your brother didn't even know it got DLed, its a stealth install and then WAM! Pop ups....We'll work the next part of the fix now. You likely got alot of it with AVG anti Spy, as its included in their database. But this will also fix some reg entries and other things too.

You should print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file for reading while in Safe Mode, because you will not be able to connect to the Internet to read from this site. Please follow the instructions exactly in the order listed; this is very important!

Please download, install, and update the free version of AVG Anti-Spyware 7.5 Save the file to your desktop.
    1. Double-click the file and select your language.
    2. Follow the prompts to install. The application will add three start ups to your system, be sure and allow them if you have any real time monitoring of your system.
    3. Once install has completed, run the program.
    4. Be sure the two options are enabled:
      • Resident shield
      • Aromatic updates
    5. From the main AVG 'Status' screen, click the update now link the update should begin automatically. If not then hit the [Manual Update] Burton to begin updating.
    6. After the update finishes, the status bar will display "Update successful "
    7. Click the 'Scanner' tab, and select the 'Settings' tab.
    8. Under 'How to act?' click 'Recommended actions' and select 'Quarantine'
    9. Under 'Reports' be sure to tick the radio button for 'Automatically generate report after each scan' and un-tick the 'Only if threats were found box.
    10. Exit AVG. DO NOT run a scan yet.

Reboot, into safe mode, this way:
    Turn on the computer
Immediately begin tapping the F8 key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the Enter key.

Once in Safe Mode, open the SmitfraudFix folder again and double-click smitfraudfix.cmd
Select option #2 - Clean by typing 2 and press "Enter" to delete infected files.

You will be prompted : "Registry cleaning - Do you want to clean the registry ? "; answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter" in order to remove the Desktop background and clean registry keys associated with the infection.

The tool will now check if wininet.dll is infected. You may be prompted to replace the infected file (if found); answer "Yes" by typing Y and press "Enter ".

The tool may need to restart your computer to finish the cleaning process. A text file will appear onscreen, with results from the cleaning process; please copy/paste the content of that report into your next reply.

AFTER SmitfraudFix finishes (and after a reboot if required), please open AVG. (If a reboot is required, please boot BACK into Safe Mode.)
    • Click on Scanner
    • Click on Complete System Scan and the scan will begin.
    • When the scan is finished, click the [Save report] button at the bottom of the screen.
    • Then hit the [Save report as] button.
    • Save the report to your desktop.
    • Click the 'Scanner' tab again and then click the [Apply all actions] button.
    • Close AVG
Then please restart it into Normal Windows. Please post the contents of the SmitfraudFix log located at C:\rapport.txt into this thread, along with the AVG report and a new HijackThis log. (please edit out all 'cookies', 'Recycler folder' and 'restore\system volume folder' references from the AVG log)

Ok, everything looks good, couple of lines to fix, but minor.

Access your Add or Remove Programs Control Panel by hitting your [Start] button, select Control Panel and click on Add or Remove Programs. Then find the following programs and click the [Change|Remove] button for each, if they are listed. If they are not, continue with instructions
Viewpoint <<<--this one came with AOL AIM too, not required.

Run HJT, and place a check next to the following lines, then, with all browsers and windows closed, hit 'Fix checked':

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe

    O20 - AppInit_DLLs:

Search for, and delete, if found, the following files/folders:
    C:\Program Files\Viewpoint<<<<---this folder

Reboot post a new HJT log back into this thread please.

I saw two items for "Viewpoint" in Add Remove Programs. Thre was Viewpoint and Viewpoint Viewer, I removed them both from Add Remove Programs.

    I could not find:

    "O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [ViewMgr] C:\Program Files\Viewpoint\Viewpoint Manager\ViewMgr.exe "

    In HJT

And when I selected "O20 - AppInit_DLLs" HJT gave me an error

#5 Invalad procedure call or agument

There is more to it I saved a print screen of it if it is important.

Ok, everything looks fine how is the machine performing at this point? Let me know.

This is not altogether unusual, HJT delivers that error occasionally trying to delete those entries as they are buried into the system, but the line is gone so we're ok.

    Wow it looks pretty good.
The browser hasn't closed since the last scrub.
    No more popups.
And it runs as quick as ever.

I'll put it through some motions tonight and/or tomorrow.
If it keeps going good. My bro needs to find some full time ant virus.
    Any suggestions?

In any event Thanks a ton TeMerc.
My brother and me both owe you one.

Glad to hear all is working as it should. Our recommendations for secure surfing will follow, along with some final clean up.

I'm seeing your bro has Trend Micro installed, is this current and updated? If not we have other free options which will work well to protect you.

Here are some good well known choices to pick from:
    Antivirus:Firewalls:
Delete all your cookies, and empty your recycle bin. But remember, by deleting your cookies, you will have to re-enter any passwords and log-in info for any sites you are usually required to do so with.

This would also be a good time to set a new system restore point for your machine.
Set New System Restore Point. Do not do this unless there are no other user accounts to be diagnosed.

Also, as you are an XP user, if there are any other accounts on this machine, they too, must be cleaned with AdAware, Spybot S&D, then HJT. Not all infections are global, nor are all the HJT fixes global. You can post each user account here into this thread, but please, do only one at a time to avoid confusion. It is very rare that anything significant is ever found.

Here is a link which describes how security apps work with WIN XP machines.
XP User Accts Security Apps Operation

To further prevent the installation of ad/mal/spyware, DL the apps below, which are just as good the fight against ad/mal/spyware as AdAware & Spybot S&D:

    SpywareBlaster
With SpywareBlaster v3.5.1 , just DL, install and check for updates, enable Internet Explorer protection, and your done! I don't recommend using IE restricted sites protection as it's not a very large database. Use IE-SPYADs below.

To avoid known malware infested sites from loading in IE install IESPY ADS.
And MVPS Hosts File will accomplish a similar tactic and provide another layer of protection.

And to prevent unknown applications from being inserted to start up on your machine install WinPatrol v10.0.5.

Another thing I would suggest, is to install SiteAdvisor. It gives sites a few different 'ratings' and while not fool proof, a good additional layer of information about many sites.

Links for tutorials for all the apps I mentioned can be found on my site as well.

Confused about which apps are good or not? Read about Rogue/Approved Anti Security apps

And just because you have security apps installed, they are useless unless updated regularly. Keep track of updates for ALL your security needs here:
    Calendar of Updates

Subscribe to update alerts for all the above security apps here.

You can also see my own ongoing security testing with all the above apps proving how securely you can safe with them installed.

    Happy surfing!!

    Thanks for the recomendations TeMerc.

    Two things here.

    1. The administrator acount I have been using is not the named "Administrator" account.
When I log off and try to log back on with "Administrator" I get a log on message saying I can't log in due to user account settings.
Controll Panel > Users, only shows this account that I am using and the guest account wich is not active.

Normaly I should be able to log in as Administrator even if this account is an administrator as well.
And since this an "XP Home" machine there is no user managment in the console.

Is this correct or is somthing wrong?

    2. The browser still goes down without warning when it is first started. Not every time it is first started but now and then.

Can you give me the exact error you get when trying to access the admin account.

And when you say IE 'goes down', I'll assume you're saying it opens and then closes by itself? Can you narrow it down to any specific time?

    Hey Guys

Administrator account on XP Home is only available in Safe Mode and does not have a password unless it was set explicidly or has been set in safe mode.

    The message reads:
    "Logon Message "

"Unable to log you on because of an account restriction "

I was tring to send this post earlier today and IE was up for maybe two minutes and it just went down without a wimper. In other words the session window just closed without complaint.

I started it up again I got to Windowsbbs.com, loged in, went over the posts for a while, started to enter a post to this thread. I was almost finished and it happened again the session just closed. I was on my way out the door and didn't get a chance to redo it untill now.
I'm typing it into notepad so I can do a quick copy and paste into the post just in case it closes again.

    Edit
I was in such a hurry to enter this post that I didn't see the new one from mflynn. Thanks

I never knew that about XP Home. I use PRO all the time. That takes care of half my problem at least.
