Hey everyone, i am new to the board and i have a problem. The problem is when i login to windows everything will boot up but i will get this message that says "Generic host process for win32 services has encountered a problem and needs to close." if i click on either debug or close the message goes away but then my computer pretty much craps out. i cant click on anything and if i move my mouse down to the taskbar i get the loading icon. I left it on while i went to dinner to see if it was loading anything and nothing. I have been on many sites and they all say i have to update windows. Everything is up to date. I have scanned my computer with AVG as well as Panda and it still shows up. Please any help would be amazing because this computer i use for school and i need to have it running soon. Thanks alot.

Hello backer and welcome to the Board,

If the error number associated with the message is error #19, then this may be the problem:

You receive a "Generic Host Process" error message after you start the computer, or DBCS attachment file names are not displayed in Rich Text e-mail messages

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;894391

If not, you may have something nasty running on your system, in that case:

    Download and run HijackThis:

Download from here http://radiosplace.com/ latest version 1.99.1

Download it to it's own folder, for example create a folder C:\HijackThis
unzip (double click on zipped folder)

    click on the execute

click on Do a system scan and save a logfile and save to the folder you just created

copy resultant .txt file and paste into your next post

    Regards - Charles

I have been having Generic Host problems as well, I dont go to **** afetrwards, but several programs do not function properly. Anyway, I turned off automatic updates for windows (Control Panel-> Automatic Updates, or Security Center, set Automatic updates to Off, no other setting helped in my case.) This stopped the Generic Host Process crash, however I still have the root problem. Anyway Good Luck, hope this helps a bit.

    Hello backer,

Sorry for the delay in getting back to you.

This line is questionable: O20 - Winlogon Notify: winzlo32 - winzlo32.dll (file missing)

    May indicate malware infection.

I'm moving the tread to the Removal section.

    Regards - Charles

Hello and welcome to WindowsBBS Forums.

Looks to be a couple of nasties there, so lets begin removal.

Please follow these instructions, exactly, for proper HJT installation. Please place HJT into ITS OWN PERMANANT FOLDER. It must not be installed on the desktop.

You can do this by going to My Computer (Windows key+e) then double click on C: then right click and select New then Folder and name it HJT. Move HijackThis.exe into this folder (C:\HJT\HijackThis.exe). When you run HijackThis.exe from C:\HJT folder and have it "Fixed checked" it will create a backup file of modifications to use if restore is necessary which is easily accessible.

    Download Atribunes ATF Cleaner
    • Double-click ATF-Cleaner.exe to run the program.
    • Tick the following boxes:
      • Windows Temp
      • Current User Temp
      • All User Temp
      • Cookies<<<---By deleting your cookies, you will have to re-enter any passwords and log-in info for any sites you are usually required to do so with.
      • Temporary Internet Files
      • History
      • Prefetch
      • Java Cache
    • Click the [Empty Selected] button.
We'll empty the Recycle Bin later, once we know you're all cleaned up and nothing needs to be restored.

Open Hijackthis, select the [Do a system scan only] button and look over the following entries I have listed, check the boxes [] next to them and press the [Fix Checked] button. When you are doing this, make sure you have No IE windows, nor any other browsers open, including this one. Reboot if I have specified below, and post a fresh HijackThis log.

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UserFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u

    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [winconf] C:\WINDOWS\TEMP\6074222B.exe

    O20 - Winlogon Notify: winzlo32 - winzlo32.dll (file missing)

Reboot, into safe mode, this way:
    Turn on the computer
Immediately begin tapping the <F8> key.
Use the arrow keys to highlight Safe Mode and press the <Enter> key.

Also, enable the 'Show Hidden Folders' option, like this:
    Click Start.
    Open My Computer.
Select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
    Click Yes to confirm.
    Click OK.

Open 'My Computer' and select the 'Search' feature. Then click the 'All files and folders' button. Click the 'More advanced search options' button and be sure the 'Search system folders', 'Search hidden files and folders' and 'Search subfolders' boxes are check marked then search for and delete, if found, (some may not be present after previous steps) the following files/folders:
    C:\WINDOWS\system32\winzlo32.dll<<<--this file

To exit Safe Mode, click the Start button, click Turn Off Computer, click Restart.

Post a new HJT log back into this thread please.

OK, the last log looked clear.

Run HJT and fix the following line:
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UserFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u

That line is related to system crash analysis.

Based on some other Google research, this could be related to an update that has not been properly configured or HP software(tho I don't see any on the system).

Lets do 2 things, run the following system utilities to verify things are indeed in proper working order.

    System File Checker and ChkDsk

After both are done, see if you still get the errors. also, let me know if the errors change or crop up at any other times than starting the PC.

Btw, when did these errors begin?

    i got rid of the O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [UserFaultCheck] %systemroot%\system32\dumprep 0 -u

i did the other two things you said and i still get the error.

I got this message about a week ago once i could not connect to my schools wireless internet. I went to to IT at the school they fooled around with it for over an hour and the day after that i started to get this message.

And you've been to Windows update and applied all patches? Do you know what the IT dept did? Did they say anything?

Very well, be sure and back up all your data before doing so.

You can find an excellent guide for reformatting here
