XP sp2 home edition, system restore will not permit access to create and or use a restore point. It is turned on and the service is running. I click on the shortcut and nothing happens.

Help would be appeciated. I have run an antivirus scan and will now run Spybot in a few minutes. It had been running perfectly. Help would be appreciated This has been a very difficult day and aint over yet.

The first echelon fix for that is to disable System Restore and then re-enable it. All restore points will be lost but it will normally return the functionality.

Please note that disabling System Restore will delete all restore points.

    Did you reboot?

Where are you doing from, Desktop or all programs > accessories? Right click on the shortcut and > properties and it ought to be pointing to the location below.

Lets see if the .exe file itself will work: go to \Windows\System32\restore\rstrui.exe and double on it.

I am clicking on an icon on the quick launch bar
    properties for it are: %system332%\system32\restore\rstrui.exe
I then went to the exe file in system 32 and double clicked and
it did not come up allthough I could hear it trying
    thanks for your help

    System Restore problem solved!!!!!!!!

I thank each of you who tried to help me during these very frustrating
past many hours that I tried to resolve this problem.
    Now for the solution;
In complete disgust I began a reinstall of xp sp2 home and during that action
got a messate that Diskpeeper 9 was incompatible with xp It can be
and was set to monitor fragmentation at all time.
I did continue the reinstall which turned off Diskeeper and upon completion
I removed Diskeeper 9 from my computer.
    System Restore now works!!

I've been using Diskeeper 8 for several years on this computer and have never had a problem. I'd think that if 8 is compatible, 9 would be too. However, I don't let it run all the time. I used to and I never had any problem with system restore but it's been a long time since and I don't really know if I ever had to use system restore at that time. So, I can't say for sure whether it interfered or not. Now I just set it to defrag each night while I'm sleeping and let it go at that. Seems to work just fine.

That said, I can see where it's possible that with it running constantly in the background the system might see it as activity and not make a restore point. SR only makes a restore point when the system is idle. So.....

    Hi hawk,

    Thanks for the post back.

Never ran across DK causing this problem but then lots of folks don't use SR and even less use a 3rd party defrager, and those that do would chalk it up as unexplained or blame it on SR.

After seeing a lot of posts on SR problems, its very sensitive to other processes running in the background.

    Regards - Charles
