I left the computer on and went out. Came back and was sure I left it on  ... then I started the computer and a message came up that read: (what is in bold is what I tried to write, it scrolled so this is what I could write fast enough)

    checking file system on C:

type of file system is NTFS

chkdsk is verifing files (you can cancel by ... but it is recommeded that you run this scan
    (something like that)

    sorting $I30 in file 7091

then... deleting xxxxxxx started to scroll

    then... recovering orphaned file

    chkdsk is verifing security disruptors

    ... this part went fast

.. then it started up fine and seems fine so far.

    What was that? What happened??

    TIS!!

Power failure could indeed be the cause, happens all the time. It's the equivalent of an improper shutdown.

Check your event viewer for the full results report of the chkdsk run.

Start > Run > type eventvwr.msc press enter. Click on Applications and look for a item named Winlogon on the right side screen. Click on it and you'll get the full report.

One of your disks needs to be checked for consistency. You
may cancel the disk check, but it is strongly recommended
    that you continue.
Windows will now check the disk.

You sure had a lot of index discrepencies. If it didn't cause you to lose any files then not to worry. To be safe though, get your backups in order.

Then run Chkdsk again from Windows with both of the boxes checked. Let it reboot and go take a break for about 1/2 hour. Then you'll need to return to the event viewer and see what happened on that pass. If it was clean then forget this incident. If it keeps finding trouble though, it will likely mean your HD is failing.

How do I get backups in order before I run this? I sure hope it isn't a failing HD, I have a Dell Poweredge server, a 400SC.

I would recommend as a very minimum that you make a copy of your personal files onto a different media such as a CD.

My favorite is to use a disk imaging software to image the entire drive and store that image on another HD or onto CD's. That way you don't overlook anything and you can pluck any files you need from the image later. I use Acronis True image but there are other good ones as well. There is even a free version of TI available.

This is an excellent time for you to set up a system to protect yourself from drive failure.

Ok the biggest thing I need to back up is pictures. Most everything else is in email, I have a big account for storage. What other files might I be missing thinking about?

Is there anyway to search and find every single file folder on my computer? I bet I can delete a lot before I do a backup.
