Take a look at your autoexec.bat file and rem out any suspect command lines therein.

Er - Zephyr, I don't think NT systems use autoexec.bat. They CAN use autoexec.nt and config.nt from windows\system32 but only as an aid for programs that need strange stuff done in order to run.

Barynuk - you don't say if this is a home or work system but are you running any sort of logon script?

I dunno, my XP Home system has an autoexec.bat and a config.sys file and it came right out of the box that way. I just figured everyone had one. I do know that you must be careful what command lines you use in the files since some are no longer valid with the NT type system. I initially used my autoexec.bat to modify the path statement, which it will do very well thank you, but when I later discovered the EV changing feature in XP, I cleaned the autoexec.bat and left it blank.

Barynuk, go to Start > Run and type in sysedit and see if you get those old dos start up files. If so, look for some garbage in there that may be causing your flicker at start up.

Zephyr - oops. I posted about autoexec.nt and config.nt without looking at my own computer and just going by the behavior in NT4 & 2K.

I just looked at autoexec.bat in c:\ and it does have an entry placed by an older program. Config.sys is empty.

And from the top section of windows\sywtem32\autoexec.nt file I found the following which makes me think I may have been sorta, partly, somewhat correct the first time - but only sorta, partly, somewhat. :)
