The problem is new to me and the tech service who build up my PC has no answer : I have a brand new PC (no brand ) but ASUS P5LD2 motherboard ; it is suposed to come with USB 2 ports and it worked that way for months ; however without any notice , the USB 2 beacame USB1 and i do not know how to come back to the previous configuration ; unplugging the hardware plugged in the USB ports does not help ; the same problem happens on TWO different configurations (dooble boot ) ;any idea ? Thanks in advance OLIVIER GEBUHRER

Hello OLIVIER,

Have you tried uninstalling the USB root hubs in Device Manager and then re booting and having XP reload them?

I'm assuming you're using XP.

USB 1.1 was pre XP SP2 and with the advent of SP2, hardware that was v2. capable ran at the new speed.

General USB troubleshooting guide from MS: http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;310575

reinstall the motherboard chipset drivers or update the bios.
download:
http://support.asus.com/download/download.aspx?modelname=P5LD2&SLanguage=en-us
from the asus site:
USB Troubleshooting Guide:
Windows XP SP1 is needed for USB2.0 controller. Otherwise, an error message will show
"You must add a HI-SPEED USB host controller to this computer to obtain maximum performance "
Step1 :
Please update to latest BIOS.
Step2 :
Please enter BIOS by pressing F2 at start up and go to Advanced -> Chipset -> Southbridge to see whether the option of USB 1.1 OHCI Controllers and USB 2.0 EHCI Controllers are set "enabled" (only applicable for some models)
Step3 :
Please go to Control Panel -> System -> Hardware -> Device Manager to check whether the USB Host Controllers are properly installed
Step4 :
Please remove the USB device driver and re-install it
Step5 :
Please make sure that the USB device works well on other machine
Step6 :
Please make sure that other USB device works well on the machine
Step7 :
Please connect additional power supply for the USB device if it's applicable

News About Usb2

I am respectfull for TonyT and charlesvar ; both have approximated the situation which apparently was worse as I thought ; so here is how the probleme was solved , of course using your advices as guidelines ; first of all , as indicated by TonyT , I browsed into the BIOS and ..... discovered to my stupefaction that "usb2" was DISABLED (enhanced controllers , that is !!!) ; I said my stupefaction because I have no idea of whom on the hell did change the default settings; nobody but me dives into the depths of the PC ; in this case , no wonder ! But the step which restablished the ability of the motherboard to accept USB2 was FAR from enough ; I had formerly updated the chipset ; but I did it again just to be sure . It was still not enough : as you are "kindly " told by Intel, "updating chipset does not install any drivers" !!!!! ; browsing into Device manager and there into USB controllers, I had to UPDATE DRIVERS MANUALLY that is clicking on "update driver" and then letting windows look for an eventual update , FOR EACH USB CONTROLLER OF THE ROOT HUB !!!!!!!!!
That's all fine now ! Took me an afternoon !!!! Of course prior to these manipulations I unplugged all peripherics and replugged them with the hope, the drivers will adjust themselves automatically as they did the first time when I plugged them in for the first time into my PC ; no way !!!!!!
I suspect that my welcomed correspondants will just laugh at the story but really there should be a guidebook devoted to troubleshooting controllers ; it is unthinkable , even for a moderately (but still...) experimented user of a PC , that a build-in USB2 suddenly will transform itself into USB1( I highly suspect that this came through another install of Windows ; what remains unsolved is how the motherboard "decided" not to enable enhanced controllers); and the itinerary I had to go through is not something that a beginner will know ; I must say that not even a very experimented IT will know!!!! So far , so good . Best regards to all OLIVIER GEBUHRER

The "mystery' of the disabled bios components can be due to a number of things:
1. computers are mechanical devices, machies, far from engineering perfections, though suprisingly workable.
2. power surge: a power surge can affect all sorts of things, from fried components to altered bios settings. Remember, the stuff stored on chips & disks is just a bunch of positively or negatively charged energy particles.
3. magnetic waves - see #2.
4. other things best known to God, Gates & Intel.

Glad the problem is solved.
