Ok now we are getting somewhere.

Ok what all did you uninstall in Add/Remove?

You should now see a performance increase. What about it and bootup and shutdown should be better?

    Post another HJT log.

While we are evaluating that do a scandisk then defrag the drive. This could take a while.

Then reboot and do a windows update. ME is no longer suported but there may be some things there to update.

    Mike

    Hi
Well performance doesn't seem that much better as far as pages loading...booting up seems a little faster.

MSN was not in add/remove....there is some stuff there I have no idea what it is and if I need it...tried to copy/paste but it won't work.

going to do the HJT now and the rest of what you said...

Update on this issue. Had to take a break away from this...LOL.

Anyway, I renewed my Panda Antivirus a few days ago (on my laptop) and found out that I get 3 licenses when I renewed. I decided to take off the free McAfee on the ME (the one with the issues) and put Panda on it. Well, when I installed the Panda it would not boot up normally. Only in safe mode. Just would get a blank screen trying to boot normally.

I decided to uninstall Panda in safemode. It then booted right back up in normal just fine and having no antivirus on it....the thing flew compared to when McAfee was on it.

I went to install Panda again and decided to just install "minumum" and rebooted and it works. I am protected against "known threats" but not "unknown" and also Panda fire wall isn't installed. Wonder if this is "good enough "??

Even with Panda now minimumly installed...it is a heck of alot faster. Pages load considerably faster.

Another weird thing I noticed doing all this stuff is my ram amt changed from 159 to 155??? Wonder what that means??

    Great Lisa

I think Panda will be ok in your config. I was going to suggest you remove Mcafee for the final performance boost and recommend AVG. But since you have the paid Panda and it is fast. OK!

As for firewall I think one of the best is Kerio even for XP etc. But especially for ME as it is very light on the cpu. It is very controllable and has a learn mode.

Another thing I don't remember if you have a router or are directly connected to a cable/dsl modem.

If you have a NAT router it is a type of natural firewall. Some think a router is a firewall but it is not. Although routers can have an internal firewall. Point is a router and kerio is even better. But Kerio is suffecient for you.

Some say the last free version here, is better than the newer paid version.

    http://www.321download.com/LastFreeware/files/keriopf215.zip

    Try it!

This computer is now a keeper for a while yet?

Just me being a propeller head geek: But once you ran the uninstall for Mcafee and install reinstall for Panda you now have more registry clutter.

You could run some of the cleaners Dclean, CCleaner and Easyclean both temp/unnessesary files and registery cleans.

    You would be surprised.................

Run these cleaners ever so often. It is maintenance like getting your cars oil and filter changed!:D

After the Kerio we should be able to close this thread and move on to the Win 2K.

    Mike
