A user brought his lap top in complaining that he had accidentally checked the "Always use the selected program to open this kind of file" box when he opened an Access file. On log on several blank Access files would try to open ( probably associated with the startup) all the icons on the desk top were access ( I mean ALL of them) and what was really weird was that when you clicked run it prompted you to create a shortcut and all programs simply does not respond. He had done some research and found a registry fix for broken .exe’s but it was unsuccessful and nothing changed.
Any idea’s or is this just one of those redo the OS things?

    Start, Run, revgsvr32 /i shell32.dll

    Reboot.

Go to MS-MVP Doug Knox's site and repair the file associations that are damaged or missing. http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm

Start with LNK, ICO and EXE
Test after each association fix to see if the issue is resolved. You are unlikely to need to repair them all.

    Testing Procedure
Right click a blank area of the desktop, Properties, Appearance, Advanced. Set the selector from 'Desktop' to 'Icon'. Change the icon size from 32 to 31 and click Apply. OK your way back to the desktop. Repeat, but change the icon size from 31 to 32 and click Apply. OK your way back to the Desktop.

If the desktop does not yet appear normal, do another association fix.

    There is hope

Thanks for the reg fixes, they did work and the applications are back now. But ther is still a problem with the run line and all programs. when I click run it promots to create a shortcut. Is there a way to change the path for that? And all programs does nothing at all. I can get to the properties but cannot open the program list. Thanks again for your help:) Oh and now clicking on my computer opens a search page. There seems to be a problem with the paths on these items. Do you have any ideas on this?
    Thanks

And now the truth is out...Kelly Theriot is actually a lady! Now you know everything.....almost. I just thought I'd bump this up to give these nice folks some more recognition for their selfless work.

Kelly has always been a women, and as a necessary result female. I do not remember her ever hiding this fact.

If you are truly thankful, visit the site and arrange a PayPal contribution. Kelly at the moment gives away everything to New Orleans relief efforts. She is a remarkable women, and friend.

As is Doug Knox. He too has a PayPal account. Any monies received are sent to the Juvenile Diabetes Center. He does not take a "cut ".

Finally, and here surferdude2 and myself are too modest, contribute to the windowsbbs site. It seems a small price to pay for appearing a hero. And who knows what the next issue might be.

If called in to "fix" this problem, it would take me five minutes, I would be there a total of 15 minutes, and I would bill you $127. I would carry away with me a laundry list of future projects.

You might consider contributing to the sites above, in respect of their value to you as a consultant.
