I noticed a few errors in the event viewer
1 is in the Application log the source is PerfNet event 2004

The other 2 errors are in the System log the Source is Service Control Manager event 7023 and the other Source is NWCWorkstation event 9001

All three happen everyday, I am guessing/assuming, when I boot up the machine.

Everything seems to be working fine the System log errors go back over a year
The App log errors go way back too.

    Any suggestions?

Perfnet is part of the performance counters such as perfmon, perfdisk, perfctrs.

NWCWorkstation is configuration data for Client Service for NetWare

both of these could come from the same sorurce

Are you on a netware lan? If not in properties of the Local area connection remove all protcols that begin with nw!!!

    let us know

Thanks for the advice I did as you said and I still have the same errors after rebooting. The "Client for Microsoft Networks" and "Internet Protocol" are the only things still checked. Any other suggestions?

    Thanks

First off these errors are causing no harm or problem.

In services look for any services that say netware or begin with nw. Read the description to be sure. Then set them to disabled.

    Disable Netlogon.

In add/remove. Remove anything to do with Novell or Netware if any.

In events rt click and clear the logs.

Reboot check for the errors now in the event logs and reboot report back.

Hi Mike I found nothing that started with NW or Netware.
There was nothing in Add/Remove Programs that had Novell or Netware in the list of installed programs.
I disabled Net Logon. Rebooted and the errors are still there.
I realize that these errors are not creating a problem so I am not overly concerned BUT they are there and they shouldn't be.
Thanks for the help so far!!

    OK

    In the event logs

if you rt click you can get an option to save as

so do that on system and applications

make sure you pick save as type to be *.txt

they will probably defaut to be saved in My Documents

copy paste to post them here so I can see the actual events and the event ID numbers

These errors (nw.....) should not be there if they are not installed as a network protocol.

    Go to control panel-Network connections.

    rt click Local are connection-properties

now down in the using confirm nothing beginning with the letters nw is installed.

Now do you have more than 1 Local area connection?
    like Local area connection 1
    or Local area connection 2

If so remove the NW... from them also.

Now the Prf counters is not related to this. But for it look in services for the entry:

    Server

Make sure it is set to start automatically

    clear the events

After a reboot confirm that it did start and let us know.

OK!! The sys log is error free!! THANKS. There were 2 lines in LAC-properties with NW that were not checked (my bad I didn't uninstall them before) so I removed them. Rebooted and the errors are gone. Now as far as the App log "perfnet" error, I looked in Services for a "Server" entry but there is none. In fact the word "Server" is nowhere to be found on any line. Thanks again Mike

OK to be sure we are looking at the same thing.

    Start-Run type

    services.msc

You will get the list of services

    they are alphabetical

    move down to the S's

Mine is between Security accounts mananger and Smart Card helper.

It should be there as it is a critical windows component.

Special steps would have to be made to actually remove it.

If it is there and not set to Automatic and started then correct that.

    Get back!

    Its not there.

    Mine goes like this:
    Security Accounts Manager
    Smart Card
    Smart Card Helper

I couldn't tell you how it got removed. Unfortunatly I cleared the log so I can't go back and see when the error started showing up (if it matters). But I remember it has been doing it (showing the error) for awhile. 6 months at least but probably more like 8 to 10. This machine was in storage from March 2004 until April 2006. Actually it's possible that the errors were happening since before 2004. I don't remember. Anyway the bottom line is "Server" is not listed.
    Thanks for the help Mike

BTW if it matters I'm running w2k pro

    Well well well!

    Hmmmmm!

I think the only way to fix that is an overlay/repair install.

I don't know if you feel that you can do this or not.

    Here are the steps

    2k CD and its Key.

    Boot from CD

    yes to install

here is where you will need to be careful or you will over write your OS and lose your data

if it offer to repair using repair console chose no

but at a point setup will find an existing windows installation and offer to repair it. This is it

this is the one you choose

if done properly it will reinstall all windows files and componets without losing your data or settings.

if you do this back up all data email etc

goggle "windows 2k repair install" to find more info.

after you do this all SP's and updates will need be installed

Well Well Well Hmmmmmm indeed. Why don't I just leave it as it is since it's not causing any problems? The only CD I have (if I can find it) is an upgrade CD not a full install (which I think is still a full install in disguise). What do you think? Leave it or try the repair. I am confident I can do it but like I say why do it if I'm not having any problems. I'll just wait until I can get Vista and the hardware to support it. Another thought ....... why cant I just install that 1 item from the CD? Why do I have to go through a full repair/reinstall?
    Once again thanks Mike

    Ok man

I was exausted yesterday. Now rested and coffeed up. I am ready to take a go at this again.

The Server service is installed by default and can not be removed say by uninstalling.

But I think can be removed/disabled by a another required componet that can be removed. I mean something else that Server depends on is removed, so Windows removes Server also at that time.

Go back to local area connection and see if it has at least these 2 entries in addition to Internet Protocl (TCP/IP).

Client for Microsoft Networks and File and printer Sharing for Microsoft.

If either are missing add them.

    Reboot and check now.

If they were there and after a reboot you still have the problem remove them (only these 2) reboot and reinstall them. I say do this in case even tho installed they may have been damaged and not working. Reinstall will correct this.

    Get back.
