I hope I haven’t messed everything up. A little knowledge is a dangerous thing, as they say. I am running Windows XP. I formatted a CD-RW, using the FORMAT Command after right-clicking on the CD volume in Windows Explorer. Note that Sonic DLA is enabled, whatever that is.

I was able to save a file to the CD, and am able to transfer it back to the C: drive, and call it up, no problem, but I cannot write to the CD anymore, as it is “write-protected”. This is not what I wanted. What did I do wrong, and how can I fix it? Have I messed up all my blank CDs that I formatted this way?

I have previously used Direct CD for formatting CDs (on Windows 98), with no problems, but it apparently won’t install on Windows XP.

Also, how can I transfer saved email files from old computer (Win98) to new computer (WinXP), both using Outlook Express 6, by using a CD. The new computer is not on the internet. I tried copying the .dbx files from the old computer, and IMPORTING them into Outlook Express in the new computer, but it won’t work. (I was able to transfer the files from the CD to the new computer, however, so they are on there.) I’m assuming this is related to the first problem. Interestingly, I have some old .dbx files on another CD, and was able to import those with no problem.

    Help!

I can't help you with your CD problems but maybe this thread will help with transferring your files. Pay special attention to what's in the link Arie provides. That's what did it for me. Good luck. :)

There is no need to format CD-RWs. Given that you have DLA "Drive letter Access" support enabled through Sonic, it is uncertain what happened when you did so. DLA does not use a native XP "format" for a CD-RW.

Try erasing the disk, and without a format, try re-using it:
    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/306641

Since you have formatted the disks, consider using Sonic DLA instead of the native XP utilities. They are designed specificly to treat the CD-RW as a giant floppy disk, and the XP native utilities are not so well suited. Note that if you follow the Sonic DLA method, the disks will not be readable on another XP machine.

As to transferring your old mailstores from OE under Win98 to XP, see:

Not quite true. To use any kind of packet writing software the CD needs to be formatted to UDF format first using the software's format utility.

I don't know if that format command in the right click context menu is put there by the installation of DLA or not. If so, it should work. If not, you probably have to format it by clicking on a shortcut in the Sonic group in the start menu. Also, if DLA is active, there's more than likely an icon for it in in the notification area in the taskbar (by the clock) that you can use to format the CD. Put a CD in the drive and right click on the icon and see if there's a format command in the menu.

I am sorry, but it is true.

XP natively does not use UDF or "packet writing." No format of a CD-RW is required using the native XP burner to write files as the poster suggested he had done.

Well, from what I read in pmsjan's post, I took it he/she (lol, has to be female with a name like that :D )was wanting to use DLA to right to the CD. The fact that he/she mentioned using Direct CD in the past seems to point this out. If this was the case, the CD would have to be formatted first. Perhaps I'm misunderstanding. Guess we'll have to wait for pmsjan to return.

Thanks for the input. I read Arie's directions and went to the Transfer Wizard (in my new computer, to practice) via the start menu. I am trying to transfer my OE emails.

    Selected "Old Computer "
    Selected "Other "
    Input a folder name
Selected Files only and "Let me select a custom list.... "
Manually deleted all the Specific folders and all the file types except *.eml.
Then it asked me to select a file type, so I selected *.dbx
Then it went on its merry way and I ended up with two files:

    IMG00001 DAT file
    Status file

Now what? I logged off and back on, opened OE and the files aren't there. I tried "importing" from the above folder, but no dice.

I didn't transfer any settings, as I am not on the internet on this computer.

    Did I miss a step?

Also, while I have the Transfer Wizard on my start menu, on my new computer, which is running XP, it isn't on my old computer, which is running 98SE. HOWEVER, my Windows disk is from Toshiba, and doesn't seem to have any way to install the Wizard on its menu. Oh me. Now what again?

    Thanks,

    PMSJAN
