I am currently running Windows XP home edition and when I log onto a different administrator profile, I get the message that it cannot open begin.brs What is that and how can I correct it? It does not happen when logged into the other administrator profile.

    This may give clues:
    A .BRS file is:
a BatchRun Batch file (program used to make batch files)
a Corel Paintbrush file (graphics program)
a RoboHELP Browse Sequence file (Help authoring program, make the help files for some programs)

Search your comp for the file called begin.brs and try to open it in Notepad. You may be able to read some text that gives a clue as to what it is and therefore why it is supposedly needed. It is NOT a Windows operating system file.

I think an application was installed 'for all users' and your alternative Adminsitrator user is missing something important. I think TonyT is right, that it is likely a poorly installed application in this particular user instance. But lets test.

    Test:

Create a brand new Adminsitrator priviliges user.
Logon as this new username. Ignore any errors.
    Logoff as this new username.
    Reboot.
    Logon as this new username.
Does the problem show up again?

Please advise. Depending on the results it is either a corrupted profile for the original alternative Administrator user, or a poorly written application installer. How it is handled depends on what results with your test of a brand new (temporary) user.

I did as you said, created another administrator account, logged on then logged off. Rebooted computer and then logged on to the new account. I did not get the error message on the new account. I did open the begin.brs in notepad. The programs listed were as follows: WinRoll, ZoomOpen, RecycleNow and Ram Idle LE. Upon going to Add/Remove Programs, the only one I found there was Ram Idle LE. I hope this helps.

It is unlikely the time spent to repair that username instance is worth it to you.

When faced with a corrupt user profile, which your Test results showed, the best thing is to soldier on and workaround it.

If you are not happy with the temporary username you created for the Test, use Control Panel, User Accounts, and remove the account and all profile file data.

You can create a new user account, so make it something the older user is comfortable with and can remember. Or use the account you created as part of the 'Test'.

If using your "old" newusername or your "new" username:

Logon as 'Administrator' without the quote marks.
Then follow these instructions exactly: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/811151

The instructions look easy, but be sure to note what you should copy, and what you should not.

Logoff and logon as the new account.

Everything OK? The account should appear with all the icons, applications, user data, .etc of the original account, and with hopefully no longer an error message at logon.
